Laguna Copperplate Inscription

The Laguna Copperplate Inscription is the oldest written document found in the Philippines, dating back to the year 900 AD. The language used is truly unique: predominantly Old Malay, but mixed with Sanskrit, Old Tagalog, and Old Javanese—especially in its official titles.

It tells the story of Dayang Angkatan, a noblewoman whose family was acquitted of a massive debt and saved from slavery by the Lord of Tondo. This inscription stands as a silent witness that in the past, the Philippines, Java (Medang), and Sumatra were not isolated, but closely interconnected within a single, advanced Nusantara civilization.
