Daughter: Miss Kuhlman, do you have to teach about fasting? I really resent it. Is fasting even in the Bible?
Miss Kuhlman: Yes, dear, fasting is in the Bible. It’s a wonderful thing — something the Scriptures teach and something God truly honors. But tell me, why do you resent it so much?
Daughter: I’ll tell you exactly why. Every Friday my mother fasts. She comes to your miracle services at the First Presbyterian Church here in Pittsburgh, and that’s her fasting day. But honestly, she makes us all miserable. We hate Fridays at our house.
Miss Kuhlman: Miserable? How so?
Daughter: Well, every Friday morning at breakfast, she comes in with this long, gloomy face. She pours Dad’s coffee, serves the eggs and toast, but the whole time she keeps reminding us that she’s fasting — how she’d love to eat but she’s sacrificing for God.
She gives Dad his second cup of coffee, and with it comes a little sermon about fasting. Her face gets even longer. We all just sit there wishing Friday would disappear.
Miss Kuhlman: Oh, my dear…
Daughter: So, please, Miss Kuhlman — could you just not talk about fasting anymore?
Miss Kuhlman: Oh, honey, I can’t leave out something that’s in the Word of God. But you see, it’s not fasting that’s the problem — it’s how your mother’s doing it.
Fasting should be full of joy, not sorrow. When it becomes a burden, when it’s just a form or a ceremony, it loses all its meaning. If your mother fasts with a long face, she might as well sit down and eat breakfast — two eggs instead of one!
Because without joy, it’s just duty — and she’s not only robbing herself of the blessing, but she’s also turning fasting into something her family will grow up to hate.
