NRL HUNTER PREPARATION IS GETTING SERIOUS! 🎯

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to spend some one-on-one time with Liam Price working on NRL Hunter.

Absolutely incredible experience.

The session was extremely insightful, and I can now understand why Liam is one of the top shooters in NRL Hunter. There were so many small details and techniques that I simply hadn't considered before.

Thank you, Liam, for your time, knowledge and willingness to share it. 👊

And then came another piece of very exciting news...

I'm going to be paired with Ryno Smith for the upcoming NRL Hunter AXE Vlakte Jagter match! 🇿🇦🎯

I'm seriously looking forward to this one.

I've got plenty to learn, plenty to practise and now a great opportunity to put everything I've been working on into practice.

Vlakte Jagter... here we come! 🔥

WOW… I honestly don't know what to say. 😳

I arrived at the office this morning to find a package from RCBS waiting for me. I honestly wasn’t expecting this at all!

I opened the boxes today and I'm honestly blown away.

RCBS sent me:

This is unbelievable support from the RCBS team.

What's especially meaningful to me is that my reloading journey actually started with RCBS. When I started learning to handload, I had never handloaded a single round before. I was learning everything from scratch, documenting the mistakes, the successes and everything in between.

To now have RCBS supporting that journey at this level is honestly something I never expected when I started Ballistics John.

These tools are going to make a massive difference in my reloading process — helping me become more consistent and precise, which ultimately means chasing better accuracy downrange. And that's not only important for what I do on the range, but also when it comes to putting accurate ammunition together for the hunting field.

I'm incredibly grateful to the entire RCBS team for believing in what I'm building and for supporting me on this journey.

This got me thinking... 🤔

While filming my upcoming Vortex unboxing, something crossed my mind:

What happens if an NRL Hunter target isn't directly in front of you?

We normally think about range as simply the distance from the rifle to the target.

But what if the target is uphill, downhill, or sitting at an angle relative to you?

The distance you see through your rangefinder isn't necessarily the same distance gravity is working over.

And suddenly a little HCR feature becomes very interesting...

I'll be explaining this in the upcoming unboxing video — before we field test during the NRL Hunter practice session and competition.

🎯 Why did my velocity keep climbing?

This one has me scratching my head.

Previous testing had this load averaging around 2623 fps, and I started today at approximately 2628 fps—exactly where I expected.

But the velocity kept creeping upwards throughout the session, eventually reaching around 2675 fps.

That's almost 50 fps higher than where we started. 😳

26-shot string:

AVG: 2653.7 fps
SD: 16.3 fps
ES: 63.7 fps
MIN: 2618.3 fps
MAX: 2681.9 fps

And there's an important bit of context:

I wasn't firing 26 shots continuously. These were done in 5-shot sessions, with pauses between strings and a barrel cooler used between sessions.

The testing was also done around midday in direct sunlight.

So what do you think is happening?

Why would the velocity consistently increase throughout the session?
