Minimalist MATE Desktop, with Openbox on EndeavourOS

This setup features a lightweight MATE desktop environment on EndeavourOS, built from a minimal base to deliver a fast and retro-inspired experience.
What I installed:

- mate-core (essential MATE components)

- mate-settings-daemon

- mate-panel

- mate-session-manager

- mate-control-center

- mate-menus

- mate-notification-daemon

- mate-terminal (optional, I also use Terminator)

- mate-media (for volume control applet to appear in the panel)

I replaced the default Marco window manager with Openbox and disabled compositing via MATE’s Control Center for a classic, no-frills look.

The main GTK theme is MaxFlat-mod, providing a clean and modern feel, paired with Curve010-Pink as the Openbox window decoration for a subtle vintage touch. The icon set is inspired by classic Windows XP, completing the nostalgic aesthetic.

This minimal configuration focuses on essentials, prioritizing speed and simplicity without sacrificing functionality — ideal for those who want a streamlined desktop with retro charm.

As shown in the screenshot with Neofetch open, the memory usage is impressively low:

Memory: 486MiB / 7622MiB
