With a gasp, Devin opened his eyes only to scrunch them closed again. With a groan, he massaged his temples, trying to ease this intense headache that suddenly plagued him. Eventually, he was able to reopen his eyes and take in the view around him. No longer was it this perfect, pristine utopia Devin had always known. No, this, this was the REAL world; a decrepit miserable place left in shambles, a far cry from what it used to be. Tall glass skyscrapers that used to be a gorgeous feat of engineering and design were shattered and crumbling to the ground. Multi-story concrete parking lots had massive chunks missing from each side and a massive overgrowth of vines and moss decorated the material that happened to be left standing. Looking across the street, Devin noticed what looked like a convenience store. Although there were no lights on (not that there was a working power grid nearby to attach it to), it was blatantly evident by the overturned shelves and empty cans littering the tile floor that it had been picked clean. Not even a crumb for for a mouse could be found... But that brings another point. For the first few minutes it took for everyone to realize what was going on, the surrounding world was silent. Eerily silent. No chirps of birds, no barking of dogs, and no buzzing of insects. Just...
Nothing.

Nothing.

Nothing.

Devin had questions, but no one to answer them. The people around him that were in attendance for the speech were a sight to behold. Murmurs of confusion led to wide-eyed stares at the real (in flesh) person standing an arms reach away. Now, you may have heard of what happens when people go out into the public after being released from a quarantine, or perhaps you've heard stories about how people are usually much bolder and abrasive, having less sympathy when able to hide behind keyboards and screens; well, the same principal holds true here. All of these people have spent their entire lives blinded from the truth and spoon-fed a beautiful falsehood. They've never had to interact with a real person before, only their avatars: digital code. And due to the virtual connections no longer online to guide interactions, nobody knew *how* to act. One innocent question said with the slightly wrong intonation led to hurt feelings. Hurt feelings led to a rude comment. One rude comment led to ten insults led to yelling, and screaming matches turned into brutal fistfights. Devin ran off before he could get caught in the crossfire.

Devin didn't know where he was going, and he wasn't sure he really cared; His heart was pounding and his head was running a million miles a minute. Once Devin had reached the outskirts of town, far away from the hysterical mob, he got a chance to gather his thoughts. This was nice! I mean, *yes*, the mass public was a confused, scared, angry mess...but it was *real*. Actual feelings with actual intensity, THIS is what Devin had been craving! Something REAL.

"What brings you here?" A voice called out to Devin, startling him. Standing before him was a trio of people.

"I'm not really sure. One minute I'm attending the City's anniversary celebration and the next-"

"You get a hard dose of reality?" The woman chuckles.

"Reality? Who are you guys?"

"Us? We're the ones who refuse to be fooled by Connection Network's lies! I'm Sanders, by the way. I'm also the reason you and everyone else is seeing the truth right now!"

Devin notices the computer Sanders is holding, and assumes that whatever was keeping him and everyone else shielded from reality was hacked (at least the glitches made sense now).

"That-" Sanders points to the man in purple, "is Chet, he's the leader of a group of people further away from here who choose to live outside of Connection Network's control. And that-" Sanders points toward a smaller woman in goth attire.

"Crimson, is that you?" Devin asks, to which the woman shyly nods. "You seem different."

"...Yes. Behind screens and avatars, it's easy to be someone you're not." Crimson mumbles out, barely loud enough for Devin to hear.

"So you guys are behind this? You hacked into the system? Why?"

"That's a stupid question!" Chet barks out. "We want to take Connection Networks® down! Look around, look at what their influence has done to our world... YOUR world! They need to be stopped, and WE intent to do it!"

And so, the rag-tag group started their long, arduous trek to the tall building in the far distance, the only one in perfect condition, sticking out like a sore thumb amongst the debris and decay: Connection Network's® HQ.
