Today marks the day of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s birth anniversary.

Ranjit Singh was the first Indian in a millennium to turn the tide of invasion back into the homelands of the traditional conquerors of India, the Pashtuns (Afghans), and he thus became known as the Lion of the Punjab.

All Ranjit Singh’s conquests were achieved by Punjabi armies composed of Sikhs, Muslims, and Hindus. His commanders were also drawn from different religious communities, as were his cabinet ministers.

Ranjit Singh was reported to be short and unattractive. He was blind in one eye and had a face pitted with pockmarks. A lover of life, he liked to surround himself with handsome men and women, and he had a passion for hunting, horses, and strong liquor.

Classic case of projection: Since most of us Indians grew up under authoritarian parenting, if we come across someone who has a healthy relationship with their parents, where they’re not bound by aggressive parental expectations. We often automatically project our own disappointment in our parents onto others, this is a defence mechanism our boy Subhash is using in the comment section below.
