#BecomingFilipino is an adventure. It is the journey of a 26 year old Canadian trying to “Become Filipino”. Simply put, I am not Filipino. I don’t have a Filipino passport and it would be almost impossible for me to get one. Truth is I will never be able to say “I am Filipino”. But there are so many simple beautiful things that I have experienced and witnessed that make up Filipino culture… Things that I would be honoured to learn from, and be honoured to share with the world around me.
I love the Philippines and it is my home :)

I sent this to my friend while stuck in a traffic jam waiting along EDSA. His response:
“Man you look so happy…”
Yeah, I guess you could say I am. Not because I am currently battling through Metro Manila on my motor and it is a wonderful experience… honestly, it isn’t. Scootering in the National Capital Region is something I avoid as much as I can (which is why I always add a tip for delivery drivers… full respect to them). But saying that, I am happy. Because I am here in the Philippines, and because I am Filipino. I accept all the pro’s and con’s of the country that is my home now. I choose to take them on with a positive attitude and do whatever I can to maintain that mentality even through the intensity and organized chaos. Maybe that will help add a little positivity and motivation into the world around me?

“Lab! Don’t post this… people will think I am pregnant!”
I walk into our room the other night, and Therine was snacking on a jar of Ube Jam from Baguio… straight from the bottle! I actually thought this was both awesome and hilarious. Why? Because I do the same sometimes! 😂😀
I snapped some photos…
But then Therine said:
“Lab don’t post it!”
We started talking about how a funny picture of a classic moment of eating ube jam in bed… might be “chismosafied” into something more than it is. But then I realized…
UBE JAM RULES!
And after a trip to Baguio, I am certain many other people have found themselves back at home doing the same thing Therine was doing! 😀💪
So to all ube jam lovers and chismosas out there…

The next adventure was certainly a local one…
With a trusty malong and duyan, I boarded a boat!
It wasn’t glamorous… but it was exactly where I needed to be. Strangely calming laying amongst the chicken squacks, gin tagays, cellphone music, and unique yoga sleeping poses. Everyone on the boat was on a trip somewhere…
with purpose.

Almost forgot to eat because I was so overwhelmed walking around looking at the design of this restaurant…
Puerto Princesa certainly has some funky places to have lunch! Our friends from the tourism office took us to this place called Kajoels Restaurant, and wow, what a vibe! It was like a natural art museum… with everything from puso ng saging to artwork hanging off the walls. I literally couldn’t sit still when we first arrived. Had to look around and soak up the surroundings!
I enjoyed our shake and seafood platter… but even more so, just the fun experience being here!
Being a big city, the second biggest in terms of landsize, I am sure Puerto Princesa has a lot of “funky places” to eat and enjoy! So happy to have a day tour with Puerto Princesa Tourism.

Back home in Cateel.
You know what filled me with the most joy (besides seeing my family) these past few weeks? The conversations. It was a magical feeling talking with so many people about the Philippines, while being outside of the country. It is hard to explain, but this past trip really made me realize...
My life is deeply connected with the Philippines.
And I am proud and grateful to share about it.
