In Kerala, Thiruvathira is more than just a date; it is a celebration of womanhood, marital bliss, and the cosmic energy of Lord Shiva. While Tamilians focus on the "Darshanam" of Lord Nataraja, in Kerala, the focus shifts to the ritualistic fasts and the graceful Thiruvathirakali dance.
Since today is January 3, 2026, today is the actual day of the festival!
Core Rituals & Traditions
The festival is primarily observed by women (both married and unmarried) to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and Parvati.
* The Fast (Vratam): Devotees abstain from rice-based meals. Instead, they eat dishes made of wheat, arrowroot, or tubers.
* Thudichukuli: Early in the morning, women go to local ponds to take a ritual bath. They sing special songs and rhythmically splash the water with their hands.
* Thiruvathirakali: Also known as Kaikottikali, this is a graceful circle dance performed around a Nilavilakku (traditional lamp). The movements are slow and rhythmic, synchronized with clapping.
* Pathira-poochoodal: At midnight, women adorn their hair with ten sacred flowers known as Dashapushpam.
Traditional Cuisine
The food for Thiruvathira is unique and avoids processed grains:
* Thiruvathira Puzhukku: A nutritious, spicy side dish made from eight different tubers (like yam, taro, and sweet potato) mixed with raw plantains and grated coconut.
* Koova Payasam: A sweet pudding made from arrowroot powder, jaggery, and coconut milk. Arrowroot is believed to have cooling properties for the body during the fast.
Key Dates for 2026
Because the festival is based on the Thiruvathira nakshatra (star) falling in the month of Dhanu, it can occasionally occur twice in a calendar year.
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Thiruvathira (Current) | January 3, 2026 (Saturday) |
| Next Thiruvathira | December 24, 2026 (Thursday) |
> Note: The first Thiruvathira for a newly married woman is called Poothiruvathira, and it is celebrated with extra grandness and gifts from her family.

In many South Indian traditions, particularly within Kerala and Tamil Nadu, "Aara Darshanam" (often spelled Arudra Darshanam) is a deeply significant spiritual and cultural event.
It celebrates the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva in his form as Nataraja.
What is Arudra Darshanam?
The festival falls on the full moon night (Purnima) in the Tamil month of Margazhi (December–January). It is believed to be the longest night of the year and marks the day Lord Shiva performed the Ananda Tandava (the Dance of Bliss).
Key Traditions & Rituals
* The Sight (Darshanam): Devotees gather at temples, most notably the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, to witness the holy procession of the deity. Seeing the idol during this time is believed to bring spiritual liberation.
* Abhishekam: Special holy baths are performed for the Nataraja idol using milk, honey, curd, and sandalwood paste, usually in the early morning hours.
* Thiruvathira Kali: In Kerala, this day is celebrated as Thiruvathira. Women perform a traditional folk dance (Thiruvathira Kali) and observe a fast for the well-being of their families.
The Special Offering: "Kali and Kootu"
A unique food tradition associated with this day is the preparation of:
* Thiruvathira Kali: A sweet dish made of powdered rice and jaggery.
* Thalagam (or Kootu): A spicy vegetable stew made with seven types of seasonal root vegetables.
Spiritual Significance
The "Arudra" star (Betelgeuse) represents a "golden red flame." The festival symbolizes the renewal of the universe and the realization of the divine rhythm within oneself. It is a time for shedding the old and embracing spiritual clarity.
