I Think YouTube’s Changes Are a Good Thing

After hearing all the negativity surrounding YouTube’s recent changes, I’ve reached a different conclusion: maybe these changes aren’t bad at all. Maybe YouTube is simply raising the bar.

This could be an attempt to reduce the AI slop, click farms, copied content, and mass-produced videos that have been flooding the platform. If that’s the goal, I’m all for it.

I’ve been a professional photographer and videographer for decades, but about four years ago, I made a bet on authenticity. I started an ASMR channel, something completely outside my comfort zone, and deliberately chose a simple production style.

The videos aren’t really “low production.” They’re intentionally unhyped. I want them to feel like you’re hanging out with a friend.

Most episodes are filmed in one continuous shot with very few cutaways. I play ASMR triggers almost like a radio station. You can’t see what happens inside a radio station, so the visuals simply show me working with the objects while you listen. There’s no unnecessary B-roll and no constant cutting just to hold your attention.

If I sneeze, cough, or take a drink, I mute the microphone instead of trying to pretend it never happened. The finished video still feels real because it is real.

Now, I do have a voice made for radio.

Unfortunately, I also have a face made for radio, but that’s a different post.

Maybe the future of YouTube doesn’t belong to whoever can upload the most content or generate the most artificial excitement. Maybe it belongs to creators who offer something technology can’t manufacture at scale: personality, experience, connection, and authenticity.

If YouTube’s changes are raising the bar, I don’t see that as a threat.

I see it as an opportunity.

🚨 KEWL RADIO HANGOUT TONIGHT — NEW START TIME! 🚨

Alright, alright, alright… quick update for everybody who likes hanging out with me late at night.

From now on, the KEWL Radio Hangout will start at 9:30 PM.

Tonight I’ll be in the studio putting together a camera setup for photographing cars, talking photography, camera gear, lenses, lighting, and probably spending at least five minutes looking for something that was sitting directly in front of me the whole time. 😂

This isn’t a formal class or polished production. It’s just a relaxed late-night hangout where we talk shop, mess with gear, answer questions, and see where the conversation goes.

So if you’re winding down for the night, working late, editing photos, trying to fall asleep, or just want some background conversation and studio sounds, come hang out.

😴 Long, steady triggers for sleeping, relaxing, working, or just zoning out for a while

Alright, the radios are officially getting fired up.

The poll results are in, and apparently I’m not the only one who thinks listening to scanner sounds late at night sounds like a good idea. 😂

So I’m moving forward with the scanner-sound video / livestream idea for Studio L7 After Dark.

The plan is to keep it very KEWL Radio. low-key, late-night, atmospheric, and more about the sound and experience than turning it into some kind of serious scanner show.

I’ll start experimenting with the format and see where this rabbit hole goes.

Looks like After Dark is getting a little more radioactive. 🌙

Tonight’s video is postponed. Things got a little sideways over here, and rather than throw something together just to get it posted, I’m going to hold off for the night.

🌙 Studio L7 After Dark is getting a little stranger…

Every once in a while, I’m going to fire up the radios, dim the studio lights, pour some coffee, and just listen to what’s floating through the air.

Scanner traffic. Radio chatter. Strange signals. Static. Digital noise. Maybe absolutely nothing for ten minutes… which honestly sounds pretty on-brand for ASMR. 😂

These won’t replace the normal Studio L7 After Dark videos. Think of them as occasional late-night signals in the Night radio experiment, part ambient soundscape, and part "What exactly are we listening to?”

No big production. No yelling at the screen. Just KEWL Radio, the equipment, the sounds coming through the speakers, and all of us hanging out to see what we can hear.
