Alright guys hear me out!!! So basically I have four people I kinda blame for the journey home from Troy taking so long and only Odysseus making it home in the end. The first out of the four people I would blame for is Polites (10% to blame). Now hear me out, in the song Open Arms when Polites ask the lotus eaters where the crew can find food, the lotus eaters say, โA cave, scary cave.โ If Polites had listened closely and asked the lotus eaters what made the cave โscary,โ they would have told him and ody that a monster or cyclops lived in the cave. Then Odysseus would have prepared the crew better to fight/evade Polyphemus or he would have just said for them to avoid the cave all together. If the crew avoided the cave, Polites wouldโve lived, and Odysseus would not have angered Poseidon by blinding Polyphemus and then doxxing himself. Second person I would blame is Athena (20%) because she couldโve been way more empathetic to Odysseus when Polites died. He was grieving and she made it worse. Also Athena could have helped a lot when it came to Ody and his crew trying to avoid Poseidon. I knew she didnโt really do much to be blame but the little she did had an immense impact on the story. The third person I would blame is Odysseus (30%) because as we all know, he should either have killed the cyclops or just left after blinding him instead of blinding him, and then doxxing himself during his mini monologue. That impulse action ultimately made the reason Poseidon was angry at him and made it very difficult to get home, BUT if it werenโt for Polites lack of listening skills (love u Polites๐๐) the whole cyclops thing wouldnโt have happened.
Last but DEFINITELY least, the fourth person I would blame is Eurylochus of course. Like do I even have to say much about this one, he opened the windbag when they were so close to home they COULD SEE THE ISLAND (ODY TOLD HIM NOT TO), cause a mutiny after going through Scyllaโs lair (he had a decent reason for it though) and he killed one of Helios cows WHEN ODY TOLD HIM NOT TO (basically he dug his own grave because he is the reason he and the remaining crew died in thunder bringer. Although Eurylochus is a good complex character, his trust issues, doubt, and curiosity basically caused his ending and delayed the journey further by blowing the fleet right to Poseidon.
(Though I would also blame Poseidon 100% for chasing around Ody for 10 years because he blinded his son the save his menโฆ)
