Furry Friends Life

On a freezing winter day, they left him at our workplace gate. You’ve probably never seen a puppy so skinny, scruffy, and unremarkable. He stood on long, bony legs, trembling with fear and anger, his tail cut short. He barked at everyone, yelping loudly whenever someone reached out to touch him.

But somehow, he got used to us. He mostly stayed near the security guards since our male office dog wouldn’t accept him. So, he patrolled his small corner, always on alert. The guys said he looked just like their shift supervisor, so they named him Kisho.

Kisho grew up into a beautiful, strong dog. He learned to trust people again. Everyone at work adored him—he had a warm place to sleep, plenty of food and water, and endless affection. Every morning, he was the first to greet me, walking me inside like a loyal friend.

He was quite a rascal, though. Always chasing after female dogs, coming back with torn ears or a wounded back. He battled skin diseases more than once and was one of the most troublesome pups we had—but also the most affectionate and intelligent.

Kisho even learned how to smile. If you told him, "Kisho, smile!" he’d bare his teeth, squint his eyes, and give the goofiest grin just to cheer us up. And if he ever saw you standing alone, he’d quietly walk up, place his paw on your leg, and look at you as if to say, Don’t waste time being sad. Pet me instead. And he could stand there forever, more sincere than most humans.

And then, one day, it all ended.

Someone carelessly let their pit bull loose. It ran into our yard. Kisho, always the protector, tried to defend his home. But he was no match.

That morning, when Kisho wasn’t waiting for us at the gate, we checked the security cameras. We saw him fight—bravely, fearlessly, never backing down.

Everyone thought he was gone. But Kisho, against all odds, stood up and dragged himself back into the yard. That’s when they called me, hoping I could save him.

I truly believed I could. Even though every vet I called gave me no hope, even though his wounds were too severe, I refused to give up. I gave him dexamethasone, hoping to keep him stable until help arrived.

But before the vet could reach us, Kisho disappeared.

People say that good dogs sense when their time has come, so they leave to die alone.

People also say that crying over an animal is foolish.

How many meaningless things we humans have invented?

After an hour of searching, we found him.

I cried for him like I would for a person.

We buried him in the same yard where he had spent most of his life.

Months have passed, but every time I leave work, I still find myself looking for Kisho.

I still see him, sitting still, watching the world.

And the moment he recognizes my silhouette, I know he would come running—grinning his big, signature smile.
