Video essays on screenwriting and film directing.

This is a channel featuring unabashadly formalistic analyses of cinematic style and form.

Here you'll learn to see the invisible beauty of great filmmaking. You'll learn to pay attention to how actors move, how cameras move, how the screen is used, how talented directors make scenes visually interesting, how great dialogue is written, how a great plot is structured.

I defend that, regardless of artistic intent or personal interpretation or cultural influence, there are objective aspects in stories and visuals that make movies succeed or fail as art, and by examining shots and screenplays we can find out what they are.

And we'll have some laughs along the way.

This is usually the time of year when I’d be working on a directing analysis of all 5 Best Director Oscar nominees, but neither "The Brutalist" nor "A Complete Unknown" is available for home viewing yet. Since it makes no sense to analyze visuals without showing specific shots, that annual video will, ironically, have to arrive after the Oscars.

To fill these weeks, I’m analyzing an unrecognized but phenomenal directorial achievement from 2024. Friday 21st, expect plenty of discussion on backgrounds, ensembles, precise framing and reframing.

Happy Oscar Season, everyone!

Tomorrow we'll kick off this most wonderful time of the year with a screenplay analysis of the future winner in the Best Adapted Screenplay category: Conclave. Let's see how it fares against some past winners and then some.

Bring your thickest trench coats because this Antonioni tree is getting what I like to call the Sabrina Treatment.

Greetings, the Wise Bunch!

I noticed we haven't had some good polemics in a while, so the next video will solve that, and then some. I hope you have half an hour set aside for tomorrow, cause we'll be going through A LOT of ground.

A harmless meme to whet your appetite for one of the subjects.

Next week's video will be about the outstanding 1948 thriller "The Big Clock", directed by John Farrow.

It's a relatively unknown movie, so I'm telling you great people now in case you want to watch it first.

Here's four completely random stills from the film for no reason.

Hope you have 37 minutes set aside for tomorrow!
Hamlet had a shockingly short reign as the longest video ever...

Be prepared for jabs, lauds and plenty of titles in the movie list of movie lists! And it's most definetely not what you're thinking.

Well, this is awkward...

The latest video got a copyright claim and won't be published until that's resolved (remind me not to analyse a Warner film any time soon). Once it's cleared, I'll release it immediately.

For now, the video's only available on my Patreon page.

P.S.: In case you're thinking this is a dastardly ploy to get you to join me on Patreon, I assure you I could've come up with something that didn't hurt my views.

Bad news, the Wise Bunch...

My latest video got a copyright claim blocking it across the globe (I'd never gotten that one before). I started a rightful dispute because it's a textbook case of fair use.

Unfortunately, the video won't be published until this matter is resolved.

The video is available in full on my Patreon page though, so, if you cannot wait, that's an option I'd recommend: www.patreon.com/Moviewise

I hope to be back soon with better news.
