Dear brother, and sisters, icons started in the first century of Christianity. Christians used to be fed to lions, and other animals, used to be killed and prosecuted.
They used to hide in caves and some houses. They used to draw those drawings and icons on the walls of the caves to teach others about Christ and what has happened.
However, when Christians pray in front of those icons, they do not pray for the wood or paint, but they pray to the Lord “Yahweh” the Father, the son “Jesus” and the Holy Spirit The one God, in three Hypostasis.
It is the same when Isis used to burn, icons or Churches, they did not burn actually Jesus or the house of lords to end Christianity. Because we are the church, who Jesus came to save and built on Earth.
Later on the Western church used different art from the Greek and Italian, started using statues. We agree or not it’s a different art and that’s what they are using. So when they pray, they don’t pray to the statue, the clay or gypsum thing they pray to the Lord in heaven, the same method like every one else.
Anyway, the church faced a lot of criticism through out all these years and they start burning icons or something like that you can see that until today.
There is a book for Saint John of Damascus about the subject please read it.
