Can you still learn music as an adult?

This is a question we get asked all the time:

“Am I too old to learn how to play music?”

After 20 years of teaching, we can confidently say this:
some of our best students have been adults.

There’s a common belief that learning music becomes harder with age — but for most people, that simply isn’t true. Nothing fundamental changes in your brain or body that stops you learning.

In fact, adults often have real advantages:

a more patient, focused approach

a better understanding that progress takes time

a wider taste in music and clearer goals

We teach adults who practise most days, and others who play just a few times a week — and both make steady, meaningful progress.

From a teaching point of view, adults are a joy to work with. Lessons tend to focus on music they genuinely love, without pressure from exams or rigid curriculums.

So we can say this wholeheartedly:
no adult is ever “too old” to start learning music.

At BMT you’ll see lots of children — simply because demand is high — but music is for everyone.

These days, when someone asks us, “Am I too old to learn the guitar?”, we move straight on to a better question:

What music are you into?
And which instrument do you fancy — guitar, piano, or drums?

A few days ago, a parent asked in a local Trowbridge group for recommendations for music lessons for their child.

What followed was something really special.

Parents, adult students, and families all jumped in to recommend BMT School of Music — sharing their experiences, progress stories, and kind words. No prompting. No ads. Just real people backing something they believe in.

As a small, family-run music school, that kind of support means everything to us. It’s how BMT has grown since 2005 — from one-to-one lessons taught by bike, to hundreds of weekly students learning guitar, piano and drums across our studios today.
