Your Universe - Coffee - A Girl Named Bea - The Wedding Singer
This event happened a week after that first BGC busking experience. February 7, 2021 na to. I applied online and this was my first time at Eastwood and second busking experience. Medyo gamay ko na at this point and comfortable nako sa pag kanta in public. Pumunta ako dito with one mission in mind.
So I took this one seriously and needed to perform better. I came here prepared. This picture was taken by a girl named Bea.
So I did my first set and performed exactly how I wanted it. Security guards are watching intently. People with their face mask and face shield on casually dropping money, listening, saying hi and hellos. Pulling out their cameras, recording, taking picture and having small conversations with me as well. Madaming tao nun sa Eastwood if I remembered correctly. Pero social distancing padin.
Eto sure ako ah. The last song that I sang nung first set ko is Your Universe by Rico Blanco. So pahinga. Break muna ko nun. After finishing the set, I was startled when a girl from the back approached me with an iced coffee in her hand and told me "hey you sounded really nice this is for you"
May dala syang iced coffee. Medyo shookt ako nun kasi sobrang unusual yung gesture. Awkward 7 seconds talaga na hindi ko alam kung pano mag function nun hahaha. Most people kasi would drop money, flash their cameras, listen intently, start casual convos, literally hand you money to shake your hand and some offer gig opportunities.
Not to say that those things are not a big deal ah, but the idea of going to a coffee shop to buy a drink as an appreciation To give to a random busker (me) performing on the street have so much impact to me at that time.
I'm not used to giving gifts or receiving one. Kaya siguro ganon. And it was pandemic so kulang na kulang tayo sa human interaction.
Like nung nangyari a week ago before this, when a person from BGC took the time to get a piece of paper and wrote encouragement to "keep doing what you are doing"
So as a grown man, it was a major weakness and a soft moment for me. What amazes me is that when I was explaining it to her, she couldn't grasp the impact that it had on me. Probably the same reason how I couldn't grasp how the music impacted her to the point na binigyan nya ako ng kape.
Going back to the story, umupo muna kami dun sa likod to talk. I explained to her na this is so weird, first time lang may gumawa ng ganto ganyan. She told me na she heard me sang and had to do something about it and bought coffee. Then we exchanged stories. Favorite movies, music, what the pandemic did to our lives, what we currently do in life and her name is Bea and she lives around the area lang. We even took a selfie and di ko na mahanap ngayon yung picture namin haha. Buti nahanap ko pa itong pag picture nya sakin.
Balik facemask everytime na dumadaan si kuya guard haha nung time na yun.
In the middle of the conversation, a dad with his kid approached me and said that he heard me from over there and listened to the whole set and he liked it and he handed me 200 pesos and shook my hand and left. Sobrang random nun but I appreciate it. Pero plus pogi points yun kay Bea hahahahaha that's all I was thinking about.
I never went back to busking. I was focused on this person and our conversation. We talked for hours and ayoko na kumanta and niligpit ko nalang yung mga equipments and packed up haha. Then we went to starbucks and we're still talking. Yup more caffeine. Then we went back outside dun sa may mga water and grass dun sa tapat ng mall. Usap padin. Until nilapitan kami ng guard na mam/sir bawal na po tumambay dito. It's late na kasi. So we had nowhere to go. Madaling araw na at sarado na Eastwood.
So we walked to her place and it was the longest goodbye ever. Literally 30 minutes. Ayaw pa magsi uwian. Di rin nakapasok ang kuya mo sa place nya kasi bawal visitor and nandun nanay nya sa condo hahaha. But we can tell from each other na we are really invested. We exchanged social media. (she is not very active) She eventually went home after a long hintayan and nag taxi nadin ako pauwi.
I went home happy. Pag gising ko kinabukasan, I got a bunch of message from strangers. Basically mga nakapanuod ng busking. Mostly compliments. But one thing stood out, I got a message from a girl mga 6pm pa yun ng kahapon. So during performance pa yung message, before bea. (binalikan ko yung convo na to sa messenger as i'm writing this)
"Hi, good day! I heard you sang at Eastwood. I would just like to know if you also sing at weddings?" (copy paste)
I was shooked so reply naman agad ako basically her and her husband are looking for a wedding singer for their wedding ng January 2022 so malayo pa.
"Your voice is something every couple looks forward to hear on their wedding." (copy paste)
Wala kong masabi. I can't help but say yes and I was really excited.
Dumaan yung February, March(balik ECQ) and the rest of the year. February pa yung last message nya na "Looking forward to working with you" I stalked her profile throughout the year and apparently they lost their baby.. They are beautiful people. They legit look like both of them are from well off family and studied sa Big 4. I'm not sure kung ano nangyari but natuloy naman yung wedding nila and they have nice pictures kaka check ko lang as I'm writing this. Di nako nag follow up and di din naman ako proactive na minessage. I'm just happy for them.
That was February 7, 2021. I lost contact with Bea and couldn't find her FB anymore and I never got to become a wedding singer.
So no Bea and no wedding singer.
One thing I learned from this is always put yourself out there. Bumuhos yung opportunies sakin nun. February 7, 2021. But things don't always work out. But it's such a memorable day that I will forever cherish. I hope Bea and the couple knows that, that random busker at Eastwood is entering the music industry as Poi.
Do people realize the effect of those "little gestures" that it can have on someone?
You never know how music can affect peoples lives so take it seriously.
Small gesture, big impact.
Don't shy away from the moment and just follow through regardless of the result.
First 50 Pesos - When I Met You - Handwritten Note
I first started as a busker. This picture was taken by kuya guard nung January 2021 at BGC Highstreet B7.
This was my first busking experience.
Everytime na napapadpad ako sa BGC dati, I always see the buskers there. And I have this feeling na gusto ko talaga syang ma try at gawin someday. I mean kakanta ka lang naman ng gusto mong kantahin diba? Just cover your favorite songs. At that time, the idea was easy.
Throughout the years, wala. Puro amba lang. Dumaan yung pandemic 2020. I was just at home working and wala akong outlet. I needed one. Pag dating ng December 2020, medyo nakaipon ako ng pera and i went to JB Music to finally buy equipments. Yun yung Mic, Amp and everything else. For the guitar, I just use an old electric guitar sa bahay. Basta tumutunog okay na yun. Very helpful si kuya dun sa JB Music to recommend busking equipments. I went home happy. And made a promise na wala nakong excuse. Gagawin ko na talaga sya by January 2021 wala nakongpake kung may pandemic nun. I want to do it. So nag apply ako sa BGC Highstreet and filled out a form online.
I watched some videos on youtube on how they get to play as buskers. Di na ko umaasa. Kasi matagal na process pala daw yun. But I got an email within 3 days na approved nga ako and hiningi yung preferred schedule. Sobrang excited ko nun.
So nung Monday, nag play nako for the first time. Nag taxi lang ako from Sta Mesa to BGC. Dala yung maleta and guitar. Tas yung cardboard na ginupit ko lang tas dinikitan ng bond paper to put my name on it.
Wala pang "Poy Mesa" or "Poi" just my real name. So dahil first time, sobrang kaba people are passing by with their face mask on. Nanginginig ako, idk what people are thinking, do they know na first time ko to, do I look unemployed and all that, overthinking malala.
I opened my guitar case ready for my busking experience. Nakakatatlong kanta nako ni isa walang pumapansin haha. Sobrang hiya yung nararamdaman ko nun na i thought madali syang gawin to stand up and sing in front of people. Hindi pala. Tumalikod nalang ako bigla and I wanted to disappear. I wanted to leave and go home. Pero sabi ko kanta pako.
If i'm not mistaken, kinanta ko yung When I Met You ng Apo Hiking Society. And mid song, there's a group of moms passing by and may dinukot sa bag nila and drop 50 pesos and left.
Sobrang crucial yung moment na yun na sobrang tuwa ko na napansin ako finally. It validated my existence na parang wow may nakakarinig pala haha. Ngumiti agad ako nun and I kept singing througout that night and finally had my first ever busking experience.
The craziest part was that may nag hulog sa guitar case ng handwritten note. Ya'll can refer to the picture. I never caught the person who put it there. But I wasn't sure how to feel about it. Happy of course. It's a reach but I hope that person knows that I did not stop singing and I'm entering the music industry as Poi.
It was amazing and memorable. Thank you whoever you are.
