This year marks the 50th anniversary of my debut album Music and Dreams. To celebrate, I'm releasing an expanded edition of the album with remastered audio, original demos, and covers from two of my favorite artists, Beach House and Hannah Cohen. Beach House's cover of "April Suzanne" + the remastered original track is out now.
I grew up buying so many records that my daddy used to tell me, “Son, you can’t eat records!” and I’d tell him, “Well, you can’t listen to collard greens or mashed potatoes!” So when I finally made Music and Dreams in 1976, it was a dream come true just to see my name on a real record. I never imagined that 50 years later I’d be touring these songs, hearing young folks sing them back to me, and having them tell me what the music means to them; All the while laughing and baffled that these fans are the same age I was when I made this music back in the 70s. For about forty years I lived in a void from that dream, but I got a second chance and something even better came in its own time; I know my purpose now is to be a messenger for what these songs have come to mean to people and I don’t take any of it for granted. I’m especially grateful to Beach House and Hannah Cohen for hearing something in these songs and bringing their own beautiful interpretations to them. Life sure has a funny way of coming full circle. - RLF
