How to Win Grants for Your Food Business

Many food business owners believe grants are only for "big companies." That's not true. Growing businesses win grants every year because they prepare well.

Here are a few things that can increase your chances of winning:

1. Register your business with CAC.

2. Keep proper financial records.

3. Have a clear business plan.

4. Solve a real problem with your product.

5. Show evidence that customers already buy from you.

6. Get relevant certifications such as SON or NAFDAC where applicable.

7. Learn how to write a compelling grant application.

8.Learn how to create and go ahead to record an elevator pitch for your business. (you may stumble upon grants that require you act immediately) prepare your elevator pitch and pitch deck. When preparation meets opportunity it yields results.

8. Apply for grants consistently, don't stop after one rejection. (This is important because it took me several years of applying before I won my first business grant).
Don't give up.

Some grants and funding opportunities for Nigerian food businesses include:

- Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) Entrepreneurship Programme.
- Flourish Africa Business Grant.
-The Jerry Eze Foundation Business Grant
- SMEDAN support programmes.
- Bank of Industry (BOI) programmes.
- Lagos Agrithon (for eligible agribusinesses).
- BATN Foundation Farmers for the Future (F4F) Grant (for eligible agripreneurs).
- Youth in Agribusiness Land Trust Fund (YiALTF) and more.

To get notifications for grants you can subscribe to msmeafricaonline notifications.

Remember, grants don't go to the most desperate business, they go to the most prepared business.

Start preparing today so that when the next opportunity opens, you're ready to apply.

Let me know in the comments other factors that will help someone win a grant. Let's learn together.

I'm rooting for your success. 🍷

How to start a Plantain chips- (A simple step-by -step guide)

Do you want to start a plantain chips business?
You don't need millions to get started, but you do need a plan.

Here's a simple roadmap:
1. Buy quality mature unripe plantains.

2. Peel, slice thinly, and fry in clean vegetable oil.

3. Season and allow the chips to cool completely.

4. Package them in attractive, airtight pouches.

5.Calculate your total cost: plantains, oil, seasoning, packaging, gas, labour, transportation, and every other expense.

6.Price for profit. Don't copy another person's price. Price based on your own costs and your desired profit margin.

7.Register your business name with CAC. It builds trust and prepares your business for growth.

8.Start selling to friends, offices, schools, mini supermarkets / stores, and online.

As your business grows and you've tested the market, take the next step:

9. Improve your packaging and branding. • Obtain certifications such as NAFDAC to increase customer confidence and meet retail requirements.

10. Approach supermarkets, distributors, and wholesale buyers to expand your reach.

Many people think making good plantain chips is enough. It is not.
A successful plantain chips business is built on these factors:

A great product.
Proper costing and pricing.
Professional packaging.
Business registration.
Product certification.
Consistent marketing.
Building Systems and Processes

Start small, but build with the future in mind.

Which stage are you currently in? Let me know in the comments.

I'm rooting for your success🍷

HOW TO KNOW ORIGINAL HONEY

Customers who drop reviews after trying out our product have a special place in our heart❤.

We are currently running promo at Veeclassic Foods Limited for natural honey.
A customer dropped this review on our advert.

This particular customer bought for the first time and came prepared, he said he wanted to test our honey to know if it was original.

He carried out the water test and fire test and said we passed the test.

Honestly when it comes to honey there are so many claims about how to know original
honey.

Common claims about honey:
1.Original honey never freezes
False. Pure honey can crystallize (become thick or grainy), especially if it has a high glucose content. Crystallization is natural and often a sign of minimally processed honey.

2. Original honey sinks to the bottom of water
Not reliable. Both pure and adulterated honey can sink depending on their moisture content and density.

3.Pure honey does not dissolve in water
False. All honey dissolves in water eventually. The speed depends on how you stir it and the water temperature.

4. A matchstick dipped in pure honey will light
Not reliable. Whether a match lights depends on the moisture in the honey and the
matchstick, not whether the honey is genuine.

5.Ants don't eat original honey
False. Ants are attracted to sugars, including genuine honey.

6.Pure honey is always thick
False. The thickness of honey depends on the flower source, moisture content, and temperature. Some authentic honeys are naturally more fluid than others.

7.Original honey never expires
Mostly true. Properly stored honey can remain safe for many years because of its low moisture and natural acidity. However, its color, flavor, and aroma may change over time.

How to know if honey is original

The truth is that you cannot reliably confirm pure honey with home tests alone. The most accurate methods are laboratory analysis.
Look for these indicators:

1. Buy from a trusted beekeeper or reputable brand.

2.Check that the honey has a natural aroma and floral taste, not just sweetness.
It may crystallize over time, this is normal.
Look for a moisture content below 20% (if the producer provides this information).

3. Buy laboratory tested honey if available

What we do basically is making sure our honey is harvested from bees and nothing is added. We just sieve out the bees and that is all.

If you want original honey, you can send us a message on +234-7010699344

Wholesale and retail prices are available

Please let us know in the comment section other ways you can know original honey.

GRATITUDE to Customers will open doors for you.

Doing Business for over 10 years now has taught me that every customer wants to be appreciated. Even the toughest customers😁

If you do business with me you will at least hear Thank you once, twice or even more.

"Thank you for your payment and Thank you for your patronage"

Sometimes I would call to personally say thank you.

In fact a new phrase I learnt to use that works wonders is "Alert received with maximum gratitude' in fact some customers will respond that you have them for life. 😁

Try using this and see the wonders for yourself.

Please DON'T just use " Tnx' "Thanks", it can put off some customers.

Say Thank you at least.

You have to be intentional when thanking your customers because for them to choose you above the numerous competition is amazing.

Let me know other words you use that works for you. Mine is "Alert received with maximum gratitude". This one always puts them in awe. 😁😁😁😁.

Let me know what you say in the comment section.

I'm rooting for your success🥰

YOU ARE ENOUGH

Good Morning Friends,

I'm currently in a UK certified Mini-MBA program sponsored by Flourish Africa owned by Dr Folorunso Alakija, Top Africa's wealthiest woman and I thought to share one of the things I learned in a TED Talk.

"You are Enough, You are more than enough" You have to be fully committed to believing, and valuing yourself. Rise up to say Enough is Enough to Business as usual, Enough is Enough to playing small.
We have to accept generosity over scarcity, collaboration rather than competition, empowerment rather than power over. "

You are Enough, More than Enough
I hope this sinks.
Rise up and chase that dream it's not too late.
I hope this inspires you today.

Thank you Dr Folorunso Alakija and the Flourish Africa team for impacting the world.

If you would want to hear more of my learnings, type YES in the comment section 😍

I'm rooting for your success🥰

How to Start a Profitable Chin Chin Business in Nigeria (Even From Your Kitchen)

Many people think you need millions of naira to start a food business. The truth is, you can start a profitable chin chin business with the equipment you already have at home.

Here's how:
• Learn a recipe that customers will love and keep buying.

• Use quality ingredients. Cheap ingredients often produce poor-quality chin chin that customers won't come back for.

• Price your product correctly. Don't guess your prices, calculate your costs and make a profit on every pack.

• Invest in attractive packaging. People buy with their eyes first. A premium-looking package can help you sell faster and charge more.

• Register your business and work towards getting the necessary certifications as you grow. This builds trust with customers and opens doors to supermarkets and bigger markets.

• Market consistently. Post videos of your production process, customer reviews, and your finished products regularly. People can't buy what they don't know exists.

Remember, every successful food brand you admire today started with just one customer.
The most important step is to start.

The Biggest Mistake Food Business Owners Are Making Right Now.

I often hear the same complaint from some food business owners:

"Sales are coming in, but I don't know where the money is going."

There is a story of a food vendor who was excited because customers kept buying her meals. She believed business was booming.

One day, she decided to recalculate the cost of producing just one portion of her food.

The result shocked her.

The ingredients she used had increased so much in price that she was losing money on every plate she sold. She had only increased her selling price by a small amount because she was afraid customers would stop buying.

She wasn't making a profit.

She was working harder, selling more, and slowly eating into her capital.

Sadly, this is the reality for many food business owners today.

The prices of ingredients are increasing; Rice, chicken, vegetables, spices, dairy products, packaging materials, cooking gas, transportation, and even electricity costs have all gone up.

If you're still using the same prices you calculated months ago, you're most likely giving away your profit without realizing it.

Proper food costing helps you:

- Know your true cost of production.
- Set profitable selling prices.
- Protect your business from rising costs.
- Make better business decisions.
- Build a sustainable business instead of just staying busy.

Remember, customers don't pay your suppliers. You do.

Your business deserves to make a profit.

Don't guess your prices.
Don't copy your competitors.
Cost every product properly.

Because in today's economy, businesses that know their numbers will always have a better chance of surviving and growing.
