Today I am launching a new podcast project called Black in The City of London, dedicated to documenting the black experience in connection with the Square Mile from antiquity right up until the modern day. My fascination with the City of London stems from my days running Conspiracy Theory tours a while back but, to be honest, I found the historical realities were often more shocking than any conspiracy theory, so I began to learn a bit more, chasing the shadows of history, trying to use the work of a cavalcade of pioneers.

It has been a labour of love that has consumed much of time but it has been far from a fruitless task. The aims of the project were threefold:
To tell the stories of black people in the City of London from antiquity until the present day.
To examine the notion that London was a mutli-cultural, multi-racial city long before Windrush.
The third aim of this project is to let people of colour tell their stories about working in the City of London up to the present day.
The project has been supported by a grant from the Barbican's Community Engagement Team and has seen me interviewing historians, archivists, activists, black-history experts, lawyers, politicians, clergy, doctors, soldiers, technologists, educators and financiers. The interviews have been done in lunch breaks, odd moments and on days off, via Zoom with people on two continents, and reflect a range of perspectives.
Thanks to all of the people that attended the launch event last week. Thanks to all the people that have been interviewed for season 1.
In this episode I interview Nick Draper, formerly Co-director of the Structure and Significance of British Caribbean Slave-ownership 1763-1833 project (2013-2015) and co-founder of the original Legacies of British Slave-ownership project (2009-2012). Nick and I discuss the economic connections between the docks, slavery and the City of London, the nature and scale of wealth derived from British involvement in the transatlantic slave trade and the involvement of British financial institutions in profiting from the trade.
In the second half of the episode, I interview Jean-Francois Manicom, Senior Curator at the Museum of London Docklands. They discuss how the Museum, which sits in a waterside warehouse atop the West India docks, covers the topic of transatlantic slavery and the challenges of telling this story.
