Sooo the late 60s-70s are is when sci fi got 'real' visually right? Like before that it was a little goofy and tacky. 2001 a space odyssey and French sci-fi comics (that would greatly inspire the look and feel of the Star Wars OT) made all that tech seem actually functional. No disrespect to sci fi before this era of course! A New Hope made sci fi less shiny and more grungy. As a mainer, I totally see Mos Eisley as an alien version of a rough around the edges little farming town. Heavy metal magazine, dispite being 'wish fulfillment' and very idealized or maybe before it became less artistic still seems very real, is or was very 3 dimensional, nearly realistic and seems to hint at fleshed out alien and fantasy societies instead of just slapping green face paint on a person and calling it a day. I love fantastic realism, you can really make it so dense and lived in. I point you to the wizarding world of Harry Potter. It's literal 3 dimensional art, art you can walk in. Everything is realistic, lived in and detailed yet it's still wonderful, dreamlike fantasy. I just hope to be able to fully implement this philosophy into my own work! I want to do realism not to render an apple but to create buildings, people, cultures and creatures that seem real. Easier said than done though lol.
