Some things should be left behind closed doors, as some things are done and said behind masks. But who and what circumstances determine when they should or shouldn’t come from behind closed doors and what exactly happens when masks are removed at one’s will.
This is for me, as I share out-loud about the chains that bind our minds, the boxes we’re placed in by tradition, by authority, and by the words people use.
Too often, we are taught to believe that if someone says “God,” or quotes the Bible, or stands in a pulpit, they must be holy, trustworthy, incapable of harm.
But words are not proof of goodness.
Titles do not guarantee integrity.
And faith, when wielded as a weapon, can do more damage than any sword.
We live in a world where manipulators wear many faces.
They walk among us as neighbors, coworkers, politicians, doctors, lawyers, and yes even as military leaders and clergy.
They know how to twist words, how to hide in plain sight, how to make us doubt our own experience.
Sometimes, we don’t even realize we’re in a Cult until it’s too late, until we’re blinded by loyalty or fear.
I have seen people use “spare the rod and spoil the child” as an excuse for cruelty, turning discipline into violence.
I have seen those who preach love in public, yet practice harm in private.
I have witnessed the pain of those who cannot speak out, because the world would rather believe the holy words than the ugly truth.
But I am here to say and share as I choose to break the chain. I refuse to remain the box that I may have put myself in or allow others to place me in boxes according to their comfort levels.
One can choose not to be like them, not to hide behind a mask, not to excuse harm because of status or scripture.
To be able to speak the truth, even when it’s dangerous.
To be able to protect one’s individual soul, even when the world tries to silence you.
No one can change me, but me and surely cannot change other people.
But it’s an individual choice to realize one can refuse to be complicit.
There’s the option that can refuse to let titles, uniforms, or religious language blind someone to the reality of harm. Looking for and finding like minded and/or similar people who can stand together, in the light, and say: No more.
To break the chains takes consistency and calling out wrongdoings that harm human beings because of differences one cannot control.
Seeing with clear eyes to be the ones who choose truth over comfort, justice over silence, and love, I mean real love, over empty words. (erb)
