One Piece | Sanji & TOEI

The recent Sanji controversy has spread widely, affecting not just fans but also animators, who are facing toxic attacks. Toei's top director, Megumi Ishitani, recently explained how character adaptations work.

Most filler or expanded scenes are first approved by Eiichiro Oda, while minor details are left to the co-series director. In the Egghead arc, two of Sanji’s controversial moments were handled by non-Toei freelance directors. However, Toei’s current series director, Sho Matsui, had the final say in including them, indicating they weren’t deemed significant.

While some animators or directors may have personal preferences, they don't let them affect their work. Sanji’s minor downgrades were countered by his strong portrayal in Wano, where he arguably had more highlight moments than Zoro (though Zoro's King fight had higher stakes).

Ultimately, attacking animators over these creative decisions is unfair and unproductive.
