I am Canadian btw. The United States faces a staggering crisis when it comes to gun violence. In 2023 alone, nearly 47,000 Americans died from gun-related injuries, making it one of the deadliest years on record. About 58% of those deaths were suicides, while 38% were murders, showing that guns aren’t just fueling crime, but also worsening mental health outcomes by making suicide attempts far more lethal. Handguns were the weapon in over half of all firearm murders, while rifles—including assault-style weapons—still accounted for thousands of deaths. The scale of this violence is unmatched in the developed world, and yet reform is endlessly stalled.
Despite these numbers, right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk has gone on record saying that gun deaths are an “unfortunate but worth it” cost of protecting the Second Amendment. This mindset shows just how resistant parts of America’s political class are to common-sense reform, even when tragedy strikes close to home. Meanwhile, surveys show 58% of Americans support stricter gun laws, with support rising even higher among women, racial minorities, and college-educated voters. Evidence also shows that states with stricter regulations—such as safe storage laws and limits on public carry—see lower firearm death rates. The data is clear: policy saves lives.
And yet, politicians remain unwilling to act. Even after high-profile shootings, many lawmakers refuse to change course, prioritizing ideology and lobbyist money over public safety. Other countries have faced mass shootings, responded with decisive reforms, and seen sharp declines in gun deaths. The U.S., by contrast, continues to allow nearly 130 people a day to die from gun-related injuries while shrugging it off as “freedom.” Until leaders put people above politics, America will stay trapped in this deadly cycle.
