Today, it handles nearly half of the world’s real-time payment volume.
UPI processed more than 24,162 crore transactions in FY26, compared with just 1.78 crore in its first year, an almost 13,000-fold increase. It is now operational in 11 countries, with 741 banks live on the network.
What started as India's payment infrastructure has become one of the country's most successful pieces of digital public infrastructure and increasingly, an exportable model.
