I'm very appreciative of anyone who wants to share their opinions with me, whether it be supportive of me, critical of me, or just about something else entirely. I highly recommend you check out everyone I'm subscribed to. I'm also in a band, and I make music of my own.

Here's the list of songs I will post a lesson for in the future. I still appreciate requests, but keep in mind that I generally want to do these songs in order before doing any others, though there may be some exceptions.

There are a ton of fantastic fan-made Ween compilations and remasters out there which totally keep to the spirit of the band’s ethos, but this is truly exceptional: the absolute mad lad and mega fan Chunky has compiled live versions of most of Ween’s studio discography that also include rarities which may have been included on their respective albums they were recorded for. With custom cover art, remasters of certain recordings and meticulous curation of all live eras of the band, this is a seriously awesome project that any fan should get a kick out of. The way Chunky approached it is exactly how I personally would have done it. Lots of thought went into picking unique, non-widely available renditions of a lot of songs as well as sequencing both rarities and live tracks like a proper Ween album. Thank you very much for this Chunky; your effort was worth it.

20 years ago today, Ween released Shinola Vol. 1. Though often classified as a compilation by fans, I’ve always considered it a proper album within the band’s discography seeing as its tracks hadn’t been widely released before outside of the semi-official bootleg Craters Of The Sack. Speaking of which, it’s obvious when comparing the versions of the tracks that appear on both Craters and Shinola that they received many changes and, in some cases, significant improvements in recording, mixing and fidelity. This is not to insult Craters since that has a lot of great exclusive tracks that I wish received a similar treatment, but it’s worth noting these alterations as they demonstrate the amount of effort that went into Shinola’s construction; to this day, I wonder how much new recording was done specifically for this release. The ‘Volume 1’ might sting a bit knowing that there will likely never be an official follow-up, but not only have many fans created their own wonderful variations on the idea of Shinola Vol. 2, but it also strikes me as a very Ween thing to title a completely standalone release ‘Volume 1’. It’s about as comical as 12 Golden Country Greats having only 10 tracks (though it originally wasn’t going to). All in all, Shinola is a great entry into the band’s cannon as it gives one a great sampling of most things that the band does; it covers the good, the “bad” and the brown. Lots of great songs on it, but my favorites are probably Did You See Me, Monique The Freak and Transitions.

Rest In Peace Brian Wilson. One of the greatest, most singular musical geniuses of the 20th century, he introduced an unprecedented level of depth, complexity and heart to popular music. Though his works could largely appeal to everyone both young and old, it never felt watered down in the slightest. All of the genius behind and embedded within his art seemed to be filtered through an enigmatic lens which then shined onto a dazzling spectrum of sincerity, playfulness, humor, heartbreak and more. The elements in his works demonstrating a vast array of influences including everything from Baroque-esque counterpoint and Romantic melodic tendencies to Tin Pan Alley song forms and Rhythm and Blues energy and bravado are only as effective as he was skilled at combining them in such a way that was cohesive and oddly pure. His nuanced, visionary approach to both harmony and arrangement as well as the sense of storytelling on display in his melodies is endlessly revered, and yet these attributes remain under-appreciated on some level. He continues to be one of my greatest musical and artistic inspirations.

R.I.P. Paul Di’Anno: a very important and underrated vocalist who always came across as very frank yet personable. His talent can be heard on many releases throughout the years including the two most raw and aggressive albums Iron Maiden ever released.

I've got a lot of stuff cooking up this month. A new What Makes This Song Brown will be up on Friday, and I'm working on a couple of (non-Ween) cover songs that should be up before the end of the month. On the 31st, I'm planning on releasing a big (Ween-related) video that I'm hoping will turn out really great, so stay tuned for a lot of fun stuff to watch/listen to!
