Words aren’t enough to describe the magnitude of this, ironically, very wordy and verbose book. It’s almost 900 pages and just short of 40 hours in audio format (45.5 hours at my pace!). An absolute fever dream…but also very grounded in reality.
2666 is the story of an elusive author. It is also the search for the evasive rapist/s and killer/s of hundreds of young girls and women in a US-Mexico border town. It is an exploration of what it means to live as a woman and occupy a female body in this world. It is a meditation on the kind of masculinity our boys and men are exposed to every day. It is a story about stories, told by many people - all created by a man who’s lived a whirlwind life.
Bolano brings the whole spectrum of life, to life, in this tragic, tumultuous and tender work. Published after the author’s death, this book is a collection of 5 parts, each of which functions as a standalone book, but which are better read in succession.
If read in parts, this book doesn’t make much sense. It feels too wobbly, pointless and aimless. What you need is completeness that comes from a vantage point that allows you to experience the entirety of this novel and it’s pattern of themes.
One thing that struck me, was how this novel could be profound and also absurd at the same time. Surely, women’s safety, dignity and lives are more important than sports games and writers? Turns out, to many it’s not. With this, through 2666, Bolano holds up a mirror to both society’s apathy and our distorted conscience as readers. Are we really more invested in finding a mystery man, than the malignant people harming our women and our world? Why?!
The performance of all 5 narrators was simply extraordinary! The audio format allowed me to stop fixating on the small details and instead focus on the whole tapestry.
This book can be a hit or miss for many. It will test readers multiple times. Yet, don’t let the fear of such a torrential work derail you. Sit in the discomfort. For it is in the messy and the unpredictable, that the most incredible things exist.
Finally, the siblings are united. I’ve got my hands on Children of Strife and I can’t wait to read it. This is my favourite science fiction series ever! So excited! 🤩🤩
