When Grandma comes to visit, we make Kimchi! Kimchi is something I’ve made a handful of times on my own, but it just doesn’t come out the same as Mom’s. In Korea, you often see food labeled as “엄마 손“ or “Mother’s hand” and how accurate that is, as with some things, nothing compares to how mom makes it! Thankfully, we took extra notes this time around AND made a video for all of you who are interested in fermenting your own traditional kimchi! PSA: This is your reminder to sit down for a moment and relax, homesteaders! I may have crazy hair at the end of another busy day and it’s super late but I’m enjoying my change to sit down and put my feet up! The kids are in bed, my kitchen is clean, I feel accomplished, everyone’s bellies are full, there is broth cooling on the stove, Sam is sitting next to me drawing up some ideas for our future dream shop/commercial kitchen, I’m drinking my first cup of red raspberry leaf tea this pregnancy, and we are watching some of our favorite YouTubers! Even if it’s just for a few minutes a day, these moments are a necessity to reset! Tomorrow’s going to be another busy day!!

What’s your go to way to relax after a long day on the homestead??

Pacha was all eyes on this bird of prey the other day. This sneaky guy was trying to mess with our chickens, a mama and her chicks, to be exact, and Pacha was having NONE of that! He was able to chase the bird away from the chicks, but it stuck around on the fencing that was just out of his reach. The stare down went on for a while and I finally just let Cece out to scare it off by running down the driveway. I don’t think Cece even noticed the bird! She was just happy to run and the hawk flew away. In the end, my LGD did his job, my house dog helped out, and no chickens were harmed!

The excitement that comes with homesteading I tell ya!

And as I type this, my dogs are busy outside scaring off coyotes.
The excitement never takes a break, y’all.

We've had no power for almost 3 days here on the homestead. Fuel was only available in the next county (30-45 min drive away!), our well wasn't available to us (obviously!), and showers felt like a distant dream. We were somewhat prepared for an event like this (we had a generator to keep our freezers cold, drinking water and food), but we know we could've done better. What tips do you have for staying prepared in the event of an extended outage?!
