India’s First Flag Hoisting happened in 1943 not 1947? | Netaji at Port Blair

On 30 December 1943, at Port Blair, Subhas Chandra Bose, as the head of the Azad Hind Government, hoisted the Indian national flag in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

This historic event occurred during World War II, after Japan captured the islands, ending British control. The administrative responsibility was transferred to the Provisional Government of Free India, making the Andaman and Nicobar Islands the first Indian territory administered by an Indian authority before independence.

During this visit, Bose renamed:
Andaman Islands as Shaheed
Nicobar Islands as Swaraj

Although actual control was limited, the event held strong political and symbolic significance and marked an early assertion of Indian sovereignty, years before 15 August 1947.
