Michael Afton never understood his father's "art" and William would hate him.
One of my biggest problems with this movie's writing is Michael Afton, now don't get me wrong he sure is interesting and the actor is great, but the character itself has a problem: he's evil for apparently no reason. With this post I'll write why I think this character appears shallow and what his conclusion should be.
Michael was heavily manipulated by William. This may sound obvious but it's really not, especially once you understand how different they are, it's possible that Michael never was really "evil" but was convinced that he should take after his father's actions with no objection. This is hinted by the fact that Michael doesn't seem to think about what will happen after his actions, he doesn't seem to think at all, all he does is obey what he thinks his father would say. When Charlie possesses the girl and starts chasing Michael he seems to be caught off guard, while their death was part of his plan, Charlie trying to kill him apparently wasn't. The second and most important example of this issue is his final plan, killing almost half Hurricane, Utah (if that's where the movies are set). Because, how does he plan to get away after all these deaths? That's what makes me think that William would not be proud of Michael. It seems, to me at least, that Michael's whole goal in life is to make his father proud like elizabeth does in the games (just that elizabeth made more sense since she died a kid and was more gullible), but he doesn't realize his actions are almost the opposite of William's. William planned things thoroughly and enjoyed tormenting his victims until their very last breath like it's shown with the torture device in the first movie, something Michael would have never built. William DID set traps like Michael, but he often was part of the trap while Michael only leads them to the danger. William enjoyed being a predator and being sneaky, Michael is loud, messy, his plans are risky and based on luck and he wants to kill dozens or even hundreds of people all together out in the open and quickly. William would try to hide all the traces of his acts while Michael is taking advantage of the fazfest. And the most important thing, William was a smart and creative predator because he found death interesting. We all know that games William is not the same character as novel trilogy William, which is not the same as the Fazbear Frights William and is not the same as movies William, but they all share one thing, they want to experiment with death. If it wasn't the case, why build the torture device in the first movie? Sure, like I wrote before, he's sadistic, but he took time and money to build it, just like games William did with the funtimes. Michael instead doesn't find death interesting, when mangle kills the guy who plays Jake's cousin in Chucky (I don't remember his name) he seems almost startled. When in the ending he tells the animatronics to kill Mike, Vanessa and Abby he does not even look at them while William would've gladly watched. The tone Michael has in that scene sounds disappointed, almost sad, probably that his sister was not on his side, hiding it with a smile that fades the moment he looks down showing that despite his feelings, he just wants to look like William, while the latter's tone in the first movie when he says "I have something for you to play with" not only sounds a lot more menacing but it also sounds happy and excited. When Michael sees the animatronics getting destroyed he runs away in fear, William, at the sight of the animatronics turning against him, shouted at them in anger caused by loss of control (though this could be justified by the fact that William has the springbonnie suit). So in the end, these two characters are completely different.
That's why I think Michael didn't work that well in this movie (unless this theory gets confirmed) and it would be really cool and would make sense if in fnaf 3 Springtrap were to kill Michael, it would confirm that William thinks of him as a failure and that he never cared about his children.
