A little passion project of mine. I comb the flea markets and estate sales looking to those very rare animals - VHS tapes that people use to record everyday life on - from special events to whatever was on TV at the time.
While there were literally millions of these tapes produced, many people have simply discarded them as the VCR's slowly died out. They are a rare thing to find these days.
A lot of these tapes are time capsules of the 1980's to the early 2000's. I make it a bit of a mission to rescue as many of these tapes as I can find and mine as much gold as I can.

Sometimes you find some pretty interesting stuff in a box of tapes from an estate auction.
Case in point, a couple of months ago I picked up a lot that was simply called "train tapes"
Going through them, I encountered a trove of one person's hobby of trainspotting. (or "foamers" which is what I believe they call themselves)
These videos, which comprises of over a 100 hours of footage, shot almost in the 1980's, covered railroading through many locations in the US and Canada.
To be honest I'm a bit of a train fanatic myself, so I really prize the unique bit of railroading history that's been recorded.
Since this such a unique subject with a lot of dedicated video - and to perhaps act as a bit of the memorial for the unknown person who filmed it, I decided to spin up a separate channel to showcase them.
I give you - The 80's Railfan!

Wow - 1,000,000 Views!
Just want to say thanks everyone that have come by to take a peek at what's here - it goes to show, especially from the comments I've seen, that a lot of folks have some pretty fond memories on this stuff - gives me the motivation to keep mining the tapes :)
Thanks!

I noticed that one of the commercials on the channel had gotten a rather large spike in traffic in the last day or so, more specifically my post on the Chrisco Christmas Hamper
I thought that was a bit odd, even more odd when I noticed that the traffic was primarily coming from New Zealand.
Tracing the path I noticed that the video was attached to a New Zealand news site, which turned out to be feature of on the star of these commercials - Penelope Keegan
While not really a wildly popular thing here in Canada - apparently Christco was huge in New Zealand, which it seems to be where Penelope is from. So popular in fact that Ms Keegan was regularly recognized on the street.
It's a really interesting story about the commercials, and the star that it spawned.

I've noticed that I have been posting a number of items the seem to focus on one particular item/place/topic.
I am mulling over creating another channel to do deeper dives on particular topics derived from things that appear on this channel - the idea is to have it as original content that gives a bit of history on the item.
I would probably launch this in early 2024
Just wondering what the interest would be on something like this, and what sort of topics should I cover, based on the trove of clips I have here in the Cinema?
Let me know!

I got a new haul of a few hundred VHS tapes that I got from a recent estate auction.
Going through the stack I discovered a large trove of tapes that contained off air recordings off silent and vintage movies from the 1920's and 30's. A few of them would be what I would consider to be classics. but there was a lot of pretty obscure stuff there too.
Since this was a large amount of content here, I figured it deserved it's own channel - so I've decided to create a new channel just for this - so I am please to announce the launch of the Vintage Movie Archive!
www.youtube.com/channel/UCngG...
Since this channel would be more focused on film based content than tape based content, I will also start moving some of the 8mm and 16mm films that I have here on the Cinema over to the Movie Archive .
New content on the Vintage Movie Archive will be posted on Sundays
Enjoy!

Just a heads up that I came into a huge stash of VHS tapes that pertain exclusively to farming and farm equipment.
Since this is such a unique collection, I've created a sister channel "Farm Equipment Video Library"
Link is in my Channels section.
While your there - check out my third channel "Bargain Bin Records" - a repository of some of the stranger records stuff found at the local thrift store
