FEBRILE SEIZURES IN CHILDREN
What Every Parent Should Know
Stay informed. Stay calm. Save lives.
Early awareness and correct first aid are essential.

COMMON MYTHS
“Vaccines caused epilepsy”
“It happened because of evil eye”
“Put a spoon or fingers in the mouth”
“Make the child smell onion or slipper”
“Pour cold water immediately”

These actions may increase harm and delay proper care.

FACTS ABOUT VACCINATION
• Vaccines do NOT cause epilepsy.
• In rare situations, fever after vaccination may trigger a febrile seizure in children already prone to seizures.
• However, vaccines protect children against serious infections that can lead to high fever and severe illness.
• Vaccination remains one of the safest and most effective ways to protect children’s health.

WHAT PARENTS SHOULD DO
• Place the child gently on their side
• Keep the area safe and remove nearby sharp objects
• Loosen tight clothing
• Do NOT place anything inside the mouth
• Observe and time the seizure carefully
• Remain calm and monitor breathing

SEEK URGENT MEDICAL CARE IF
• The seizure lasts more than 5 minutes
• Only one side of the body is jerking
• The child does not regain consciousness properly
• The child is below 6 months of age
• There is difficulty breathing or repeated seizures

• A calm and informed response during a febrile seizure can make all the difference for a child and their family.
Save this post. Share it with parents, teachers and caregivers.

• Febrile seizures are one of the most frightening experiences for parents, but panic and misinformation can make the situation more difficult.

• Many harmful myths still circulate regarding seizures and vaccination. It is important for parents and caregivers to understand the facts, follow safe first-aid practices, and know when urgent medical attention is required.

Key reminders:
• Vaccines do NOT cause epilepsy
• Most febrile seizures are brief and harmless
• Never place objects inside the child’s mouth during a seizure
• Staying calm and acting correctly is essential

Febrile Seizures: Myths vs Facts

Watching your child have a seizure during fever can be frightening for any parent. But knowing the facts can help you stay calm and respond correctly.

• Most febrile seizures are triggered by fever and do not mean your child has epilepsy.
• Simple febrile seizures usually do not cause brain damage or affect intelligence.
• Most children outgrow febrile seizures by 5–6 years of age.
• Never put a spoon, cloth, or fingers into the child’s mouth during a seizure.
• Gently turn the child onto their side and seek medical guidance.

Seek urgent medical care if:
• The seizure lasts more than 5 minutes
• Jerking happens only on one side of the body
• The child does not wake up properly afterward
• The baby is below 6 months of age

Awareness reduces fear, and calm parents make safer decisions. Save this post and share it with someone who may need it.
