In 2014, 9-year-old Willie Myrick was abducted from his Atlanta-area home after a stranger grabbed him and forced him into a car. The man drove around with Willie for nearly three hours, repeatedly telling him to stop talking. But Willie refused to remain silent.

Instead, Willie began singing “Every Praise,” the gospel song by Hezekiah Walker that he had learned in Sunday school. He kept singing despite his captor's anger and demands that he stop. Eventually, the man opened the door, threw Willie out, and drove away. Willie then ran to a nearby home and was eventually reunited with his family.

When the story became known, Hezekiah Walker traveled to Atlanta to meet Willie. The two later embraced and sang “Every Praise” together at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Walker said he believed God had used the song to save the boy's life.

Imagine being only nine years old, trapped in a terrifying situation, and choosing to praise God instead of giving in to fear.

Willie's story reminds us that praise is not only something we do when everything is going well. Sometimes, praise becomes our declaration that God is still worthy—even in the darkest moments.

When Jesus said, “Judge not, that you be not judged” (Matthew 7:1), He was not teaching that Christians must never recognize or confront sin. He was warning against hypocritical, self-righteous judgment. Jesus immediately illustrates this with the plank and the speck: first remove the plank from your own eye, “and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye” (Matthew 7:5). We must first humble ourselves before God, acknowledge our own sin, receive the forgiveness offered through Christ, and live from a place of grace rather than superiority. But Jesus does not say to leave the speck there. Once we can see clearly, we can lovingly help others recognize what is destroying them. Scripture even says that the person who turns a sinner from the error of his way “will save a soul from death” (James 5:20). The goal is never condemnation or humiliation—it is repentance, restoration, forgiveness, and salvation.

Jesus also called His followers “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13–16). Light does not pretend darkness is light; it exposes what darkness was hiding and shows people the way to life. Salt, especially in the ancient world, was associated with preservation, making it a powerful picture of God’s people standing against moral and spiritual corruption rather than simply blending into it. Christians are called to speak truth while demonstrating the love and mercy of Christ. We don’t point out sin because we believe ourselves better than anyone else—we point people toward the same Savior who forgave us. Truth without love can become harshness, but love without truth can leave people in bondage. Jesus calls us to both: grace and truth.
