When he said “Culture is not your friend,” he was challenging the blind obedience people often give to cultural norms, institutions, and collective beliefs.

💬 Meaning in essence

McKenna meant that:

Culture conditions you — it shapes how you think, behave, and what you believe is “normal.”

But culture’s goal isn’t your freedom or happiness — it’s self-preservation of the system (religion, politics, market, etc.).

It teaches conformity, obedience, and identity labels rather than self-discovery.

In The Affluent Society, Galbraith observed that post-WWII America had solved the problem of scarcity — there was plenty of goods, production, and comfort.

“Wants are increasingly created by the process by which they are satisfied.”

Meaning:
Companies first manufacture desire, and then sell the products to meet those desires.
It’s not that consumers demand products — it’s that advertising teaches them what to want.
