Learn English With Jo

I’m Jo Asker, a British English teacher based just outside London, and I help thoughtful adult English learners speak more naturally, confidently, and more like themselves in English.

On this channel, you’ll find British English for real life: natural phrases, listening practice, conversation-focused lessons, cultural insight, and language for topics like confidence, relationships, work, personal growth, and everyday communication.

These videos are designed for intermediate to advanced English learners who want to move beyond textbook English and feel more articulate, relaxed, and authentic in conversation.

Some of you will know I’ve been quietly building my Substack over the past few months. It’s become a slightly slower, more thoughtful space where we explore English through real life with monthly themes, reflections, listening practice, and language you can actually use.

From 1st May, the paid subscription will be going up to $10/month.
That’s because I’m starting to add more personal support and connection, including:
✨ a private Telegram group
✨ monthly Zoom conversation sessions
✨ extra materials and guidance around each theme
If you join before then, you can lock in the current price of $5/month.
No pressure at all, I just wanted to give you a bit of a heads-up in case you’ve been thinking about it.

If you’re looking for a calmer, more human way to keep developing your English… you’d be very welcome there.

I’d love to have you there.

Hello. I’ve just uploaded a new video on how to use Claude for English speaking practice. I know speaking can be one of the hardest things to practise on your own, so I wanted to share a simple tool that might make it feel a bit easier. Hope it's helpful. Let me know what you think.

One of the biggest barriers to speaking English more fluently is not having enough low-pressure opportunities to actually practise.

That's why I made this 20 English Speaking Prompts To Use With Claude. With the help of this PDF you can use with Claude's voice mode, any time, without the pressure of feeling like you're being tested. It's not a replacement for real conversation, but as a warm-up, or just a way to get more English into your day, it genuinely works. I've also got a video coming very soon showing you exactly how to use it — so watch this space. 👀 www.learnenglishwithjo.co.uk/shop/p/20-prompts-to-…

Hi everyone 💛

Just a quick note to say sorry for being a bit quiet recently. I’ve been a little overwhelmed these past couple of weeks… with work, life, the news, and everything going on in the background. I'm sure you're all familiar with the feeling!

Anyway, I’m back and I’m working on a British English Brain Dump video all about how to talk about overwhelm in English, including some tips for dealing with it and a few book, article and podcast recommendations.

In the meantime, if you’d like something to read, you can check out today's blog post where I explore some English for those days when everything feels like a little bit too much!

Before I go I’d love to ask you…
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?
What helps you when you feel drained?

Take care,
Jo x

Do you ever feel like you're throwing spaghetti at the wall?

In today's blog I explore the meaning of this slightly strange English expression, looking at why people use it and how to use it yourself when you're speaking English.

Is this rather chaotic approach one you ever use creatively or professionally? I certainly do Especially when it comes to making content!

I made this YouTube video about How To Practice English Conversation With ChatGPT just under a year ago and I’m currently in the process of making an updated version for 2026. I wanted to ask you if you’ve used ChatGPT to practice your English conversation and have you found it useful? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
