Psychedelic Rock Hub

The legend is back! Kozmik Makam's new album will be with you soon! Which one should be the cover photo?

"SPIRITS AND RHYTHMS" [FULL ALBUM, 1975]: Discovered in the dusty backrooms of an Unkapanı record store and now digitized for the first time, this mythical debut from Istanbul's most enigmatic psychedelic quartet is nothing short of a revelation. While their later works "Psychedelic Prayers" (1977) and "Desert Colors" (1978) achieved cult status, this raw first offering shows Kozmik Makam in their most primal and arguably most authentic form.

At a time when Turkey was caught between political turbulence and cultural awakening, these four musical outsiders created something truly revolutionary. The hypnotic interplay between Cengiz Kahraman's acid-drenched guitar and traditional saz lines cuts through the murky analog production like a knife, while Selim Aksan's percussion work is simply decades ahead of its time, fusing Anatolian folk rhythms with Nigerian Afrobeat patterns in ways that still sound futuristic today.

The real magic here is in the contrast – Turgut Alkan's primitive Moog synthesizer creates cosmic landscapes that somehow perfectly complement Osman Nuri's haunting ney flute passages. You can literally hear ancient Sufi spirituality colliding with space-age electronic exploration, especially on the mind-bending centerpiece "Shaman's Drum."

Recorded guerrilla-style on borrowed equipment in a converted caravanserai storeroom, the technical limitations only enhance the album's otherworldly quality. The tape hiss and room ambience become part of the composition itself – a warm, organic counterpoint to the band's experimental vision.

Limited to just 500 copies and mostly sold at the group's legendary live performances in Istanbul's underground venues, original pressings now command astronomical sums among collectors. This lost masterpiece stands as proof that psychedelic innovation was truly a global phenomenon, with Kozmik Makam delivering one of its most unique and overlooked expressions.

This is music that refuses to be background noise – it demands full attention and rewards deep listening. A genuine artifact from a band whose influence continues to ripple through today's global psychedelic revival.

📝 LINER NOTES:
From the inner sleeve of the 1968 Violet Lantern pressing

“Nerduban never played for the crowd. They played for the shadows in the room.”

Recorded in the spring of 1968 inside the dim-lit rehearsal chamber of Chicago’s Violet Lantern Club, Smoke Signals captures a moment that feels both ancient and eerily current. This isn’t music made for the radio, but for the tape deck of a forgotten basement — where echo swirls, tremolo pulses, and stories never find their endings.

Every hiss you hear is real. Every amp buzz, every tape drift, every ghost in the left channel — it all stayed. No edits. No second takes.

This was Nerduban at their most honest: ambient, abstract, moody, raw. With analog equipment humming just past the point of breakdown, they mapped out a noir-psychedelic terrain that sways between modal jazz and smoke-drenched rock séance.

You don’t listen to this record — you drift through it.

The Broken Highway - Whiskey & Salvation (1968) [Full Album]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWEv-...
-The Broken Highway formed in Chicago in 1965 when four diverse musicians converged at the legendary Checkerboard Lounge during a late-night jam session. The lineup featured:

-Ray "Mudwater" Johnson (b. 1933, Clarksdale, Mississippi) – A Delta-born vocalist and rhythm guitarist who migrated north to become a Chess Records session musician before forming the band.
-Elizabeth "Lizzy" Collins (b. 1941, Boston, Massachusetts) – A classically trained musician who abandoned the New England Conservatory to pursue electric blues guitar, breaking barriers as a female lead guitarist.
-Marcus Webb (b. 1939, Chicago, Illinois) – A jazz-influenced bassist who previously backed Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, bringing melodic sophistication to the rhythm section.
-Jimmy "The Hammer" Donovan (b. 1936, New Orleans, Louisiana) – A drummer who fused New Orleans rhythmic traditions with Chicago blues patterns.

Originally called "The Delta Electric," they renamed themselves after breaking down on a desolate highway returning from a gig in 1966. This experience inspired Johnson to write what would become their album's title track, "Whiskey & Salvation."

"Whiskey & Salvation" (1968)
The band caught the attention of Blue Flame Records after opening for Cream at the Fillmore East. They recorded their debut album in January 1968 at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio with producer Tom Wilson. Released in May 1968, "Whiskey & Salvation" blended traditional blues structures with psychedelic elements and extended improvisations that captured their electrifying live energy.

While initially peaking at only #72 on Billboard charts, with "Sweet Misery" reaching #45 as a single, the album's reputation grew steadily over time. Critics eventually recognized it as a seminal bridge between traditional Chicago blues and the emerging blues-rock movement.

Career & Legacy (1968-1999)
Following their debut, The Broken Highway released seven more studio albums spanning three decades. Notable releases included "Stone City Blues" (1971), "Delta Electric Revival" (1974), "Chicago Crossroads" (1977), "New American Blues" (1983), "Redemption Road" (1988), "Modern Delta" (1992), and their final album "Full Circle" (1997).

Throughout their career, the band maintained their distinctive sound while incorporating contemporary influences, from funk and soul in the 1970s to more polished production in the 1980s, before returning to raw blues foundations in their 1990s recordings.

The group toured consistently, becoming festival favorites in both America and Europe. Collins' pioneering role as a female lead guitarist influenced countless musicians and helped open doors for women in blues and rock.
The band officially disbanded in 1999 after a farewell tour, capping a remarkable 34-year career that saw them transition from underground Chicago favorites to internationally respected blues ambassadors.

Later Years
After the band's dissolution in 1999:
-Johnson continued performing solo until his death in 2005 at age 72, receiving a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.
-Collins became a respected educator at Berklee College of Music while continuing to record and perform. Her instructional books on blues guitar are considered definitive texts.
-Webb produced albums for younger blues artists and operated a Chicago recording studio focused on authentic blues production until his passing in 2012.
-Donovan returned to New Orleans, where he remains active in preserving traditional blues drumming techniques through his music school.

The band reunited twice for special performances: at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2004 (their last performance with Johnson) and for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2010.

"Whiskey & Salvation" continues to influence new generations of musicians, with remastered editions released in 2008 and 2018 for its 40th and 50th anniversaries. The album stands as a testament to a band that successfully expanded blues traditions while remaining authentic to the genre's emotional core.
