150 years ago today, the Battle of Greasy Grass, also known as the Battle of Little Bighorn, took place on Crow homelands on the Montana plains. It marked a historic moment in the fight against westward expansion. As many as 1,800 Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors, led by Lakota leaders Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, defeated Lt. Col. George Custer and the 7th Cavalry in a major victory over the U.S. military. Dozens of tribes are planning celebrations and commemorations in Montana this weekend to honor the warriors who fought and their enduring legacy. Learn more: bit.ly/3StpdqC
San Antonio Spurs forward Lindy Waters III will be playing Wednesday night against the New York Knicks in game one of the NBA Finals. Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Jim Thorpe, the legendary Sac and Fox athlete who became the first Native American to win Olympic gold and is still regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Born on this day in 1887, Thorpe overcame the trauma of boarding schools, racism, and personal loss to leave an unmatched legacy across track and field, football, and baseball.
