స్త్రీలు అత్యంత భక్తి శ్రద్ధలతో జరుపుకునే నోముల్లో 'పోలి స్వర్గం నోము'ఒకటి. ఓ మారుమూల గ్రామానికి చెందిన రజక స్త్రీకి ఐదుగురు కోడళ్లు ఉండేవాళ్లు. ఆ అయిదుగు కోడళ్లలో చివరిది ... చిన్నది అయిన కోడలే 'పోలమ్మ'. చిన్నప్పటి నుంచి కూడా పోలమ్మకు దైవభక్తి ఎక్కువ. పూవులు కోయడం ... పూజలు చేయడంతోనే ఆమెకి కాలం గడిచిపోయేది. పెళ్లి జరిగేంత వరకూ దైవంతో ఆమె ఏర్పరచుకున్న అనుబంధానికి ఎలాంటి ఆటంకం కలగలేదు. కానీ పెళ్లి అయిన తరువాత ఆమె ఆనందానికి గండి పడింది. పూవులు కోయడానికి ... పూజలు చేయడానికి ... అసలు గుడికి వెళ్లడానికి కూడా వీలు లేకుండా పోయింది. అందుకు కారణం ఆమె అత్త.

సాధారణంగా ఇంటి కోడలకి దైవభక్తి ఎక్కువగా వుంటే ఎవరైనా మెచ్చుకుంటారు. కానీ పోలి విషయంలో అది తారుమారైంది. పోలి అత్తకు తాను మహా భక్తురాలిననే గర్వం ఎక్కువ. కొంతమంది అమ్మలక్కలు కూడా ఆమె వెనకచేరి భజన చేయడం వలన ఆమెలో మరింత అహంకారం పెరిగింది. పోలి కారణంగా తన పేరు కాస్తా పోతుందని భావించి ఆమెను మాత్రం ఇంటి పట్టున వుంచి, మిగతా కోడళ్ళను తీసుకుని గుడికి వెళ్లి వచ్చేది.

ఈ నేపథ్యంలో ఒక కార్తీక అమావాస్య రోజున పోలికి ఇంటి పనులు పురమాయించి, ఆమెకి పూజా సామాగ్రి అందుబాటులో లేకుండా చేసి మిగతా కోడళ్లతో అత్త నదీ స్నానానికి వెళ్లింది. పోలి ఏ మాత్రం బాధపడకుండా, బావి దగ్గరే స్నానం చేసి ... పత్తి చెట్టు నుంచి పత్తి తీసి వత్తిని చేసింది. చల్ల కవ్వానికి వున్న వెన్నను తీసి దానితో దీపాన్ని వెలిగించి దైవానికి నమస్కరించింది. పోలి భక్తికి మెచ్చిన దైవం ఆమె కోసం పుష్పక విమానం పంపింది.

ఊరు జనం చూస్తుండగానే పోలి ఆ విమానం ఎక్కింది. విమానం కొంచెం పైకి లేవగానే అక్కడికి వచ్చిన అత్త, తాను కాకుండా తన కోడలు స్వర్గానికి వెళ్లడానికి వీల్లేదంటూ పోలిని కిందకి లాగడానికి ఆమె కాళ్లు పట్టుకుంది. ఆ వెంటనే మిగతా కోడళ్లు ఒకరి తరువాత ఒకరుగా ఒకరి కాళ్లు ఒకరు పట్టుకుని విమానం నుంచి కిందకి వేలాడసాగారు. అది చూసిన దేవతలు పోలితో వారికి పోలిక లేదంటూ విమానం నుంచి కిందకి పడదోశారు. పోలి మాత్రం బొందితో స్వర్గానికి వెళ్లిపోయింది.

అప్పటి నుంచి ప్రతి ఏడాది ఆశ్వయుజ అమావాస్య మొదలు ... కార్తీక అమావాస్య వరకూ ప్రతి నిత్యం బ్రహ్మీ ముహూర్తంలో నిద్రలేచి నదీ స్నానం చేసి దీపం వెలిగించి పోలి కథ చెప్పుకుని అక్షింతలు తలపై వేసుకోవడం ఆనవాయతీగా వస్తోంది.

Incredibly beautiful Mahavishnu temple situated in Srirangapatna, Karnataka, on an island surrounded by the Kaveri River.
Lord Mahavishnu is consecrated here as Ranganatha, in a reclining posture on the serpent Adisesha. Since this is the first of the Pancharanga Kshetras, the temple is also known as Adi Ranga.
