"I don't have cash," I said, pausing as I reached my doorstep. "But I just finished cooking a batch of buffalo chicken thighs. I can bring you some of those?"

His eyes sharpened, a sudden grin cutting through the dust on his face.

"Sure," he replied, shifting his weight. "Food is better than money anyway."

I went inside, packed the chicken while it was still steaming, and brought it back down. The spicy aroma filled the small gap between us as the container changed hands—a brief, warm connection built on home cooking instead of pocket change.
