Magnus doesn’t generally play such great openings, he strives to get the game out of book as early as possible usually. I think the issue here is that his greatest strength is the endgame, but FRC games are much more likely to be decided in the middlegame as the players are on their own so early. That’s probably why he doesn’t shine as brightly in FRC as in Classical chess.

Haha fair. That’s people said in Gothamchess comments re Levy’s review this year of the 2019 WFRCC like you have to look up Magnus’ loss in a variant 3 years ago.

But yeah ok Magnus is still good at endgames but sucks at middlegames. That’s good enough for me. (sort of.) XD

But to be fair it is odd that someone who strives to get the game out of book early and does better in rapid that classical does less good in 9LX right?

To be 100% with you, I also found it odd that Magnus isn’t stronger at 960 given how little he seems to rely on opening prep for the most part.

Far be it from me to disagree with the GM, but I actually have a different theory; I think that Magnus’s middle game knowledge doesn’t translate well to 960. If you ever listen to magnus commentate while he plays, he has ridiculous knowledge of A. Where certain positions have come up in other games, and B. How earlier middle games might morph into other similar middle game type positions (that he is familiar with).

Neither of those skills translate to 960 at all

The 2023 classical world chess championship had a prize fund of 2m USD that is split 60% winner & 40% to runner-up. Idk how much it was back in 1995 but I'll just estimate Garry cheated Vishy 20% of 2m USD which is 400k USD.

Garry stole money from Vishy by cheating, maybe about 400k USD. Nikhil DID THE OPPOSITE. Anyone who criticises Nikhil but not Garry is a hypocrite and in my opinion is a traitor if they're Indian.
