An excerpt from my upcoming book (a companion to my album) Into the Light: Ten Songs and Stories to Help You Turn Trauma into Triumph.

"As a child, my mother told me many, many times that I was a mistake — that the condom broke. That I was worthless. That I should kill myself because everyone would be happier if I were dead. Needless to say, for much of my life, self-love was a foreign concept.

The most powerful force in the universe is love, and there are many forms of it. Platonic love between friends, familial love, romantic love, communal love, and Agape – universal, unconditional love.

Self-love, of course, is at the root of them all. After struggling through such an abusive childhood, it took me many years to understand that loving oneself is not selfish, self-centered, or self-indulgent. True self-love is the willingness to see yourself fully, forgive your flaws, set healthy boundaries, and nourish your body, mind, and soul. It’s the foundation from which all other love grows. As the old adage says, how can you love someone else if you don’t love yourself?"

'Love Who You Are' is the next single from 'Into the Light', coming out this Friday, Nov. 7. It's about listening to the still, small voice within that helped me survive and guided me through the labyrinth of fear, shame, and doubt that held me prisoner for so long.
