What I'm Reading: Gay Bar (Why We Went Out) by Jeremy Atherton Lin
An engaging and entertaining read exploring the cultural, political, practical and prurient importance and enduring relevance of the gay bar. A read that elicited nostalgia and served up history sprinkled amongst more graphic tales of going out.
As a resurgence of all things analog is underway, a return to our roots is interesting and provokes a temptation to set aside the screens and find each other again face to face.

What I'm Reading: The School for Good Mothers
Fascinating read and I was drawn in immediately in the first chapter. The premise is wild and wonderful because of it. In an age when it feels that social media and comparative parenting have put unrealistic expectations on parents (particularly mothers) this felt timely and a canary in the coal mine call for sanity.
I'm not a parent but the writing and duration of the separation of parent and child did an excellent job of drawing out empathy for what a real world situation like this might be like. The various portraits of mothers at the school and their faults (trivial or perilous) were well explored.
The relentless push of the staff pushed me to the point of insanity as a reader and I believe that was the point. How can any human measure up to the expectations we put on mothers? That they always be perfect, that there never be a moment of danger a child should encounter and that any break in a continuum of care is careless.
While the time at the school felt long and sometimes circular in the lessons - on reflection I think this was also the point. That there is no escape from parenting (again, especially mothering) and from conception to death, there are repetitious cycles and expectations that can bring joy and incredible psychological suffering in solitude.
Bravo for a whopper of a concept, an incredible imagination and a slow-burn dystopian mirror held up for our reflection and contemplation.

Welcome to Episode 1 of Spoiler Club.
In our very first episode, we’re diving into Project Hail Mary, the highly anticipated adaptation of Andy Weir’s bestselling novel.
We talk about why this might be the sci-fi movie we’ve been waiting for, Ryan Gosling’s everyman appeal, the practical filmmaking behind the production, the legacy of optimistic science fiction, and what makes Project Hail Mary feel different from today’s blockbusters.
⚠️ This is a full spoiler discussion. If you haven’t read the book (or want to avoid potential movie spoilers), consider this your warning.
If you enjoy movies, filmmaking, and thoughtful discussions, you’re in the right place.

What I'm Reading: Abomination by Jeza Belle
I was so excited to read this and was thoroughly entertained, educated, and inspired. The story and David and Jonathan has always been a beacon of hope for me among the murky haze of reconciling sexuality (that isn't heteronormative) with faith.
The writing is beautiful and the love story is spooled out masterfully. Though I'm sure the temptation existed to ratchet up the smut to turn the screws on the ultra conservative Christians, the author instead lyrically and authentically shares a love at first sight encounter that builds to biblical proportions.
The book gave me hope for folks (like myself) that have felt ostracized by religion. That divide has ripped something inside so many of us and left us awash in the world without the anchor of faith and the communities we trusted.
The depth of research into customs, dress, military maneuvers, geography, cuisine and familial relations and political aspirations was impressive and well articulated without ever feeling bogged down in detail.
Humanity and its heart was evident throughout with a fully explored range of emotional experiences from humour to envy, lust to love, friendship to sibling rivalry. But at its core, the love story of David and Jonathan and its improbability serves as a lamplight to us black sheep who have felt deserted and lost in the desert for too long.
Thanks to Jeza Belle for a beautiful book and the energy and creative inspiration that swings a spotlight on queer love and its validity, historically and today, and how a love this deep and true can only be experienced and acknowledged as sacred.
