Is After-Sales Service the Missing Link in India’s Biogas Revolution?

Over the past decade, I have closely followed the growth of decentralized renewable energy solutions in India, especially biogas technology for dairy farms and organic waste management.

Around six years ago, I interviewed Sistema.bio when they had just entered the Indian market. Since then, they have scaled rapidly—partnering with institutions like Tata Trusts and other foundations—installing 50,000+ small-scale biogas plants across the country.

Their positioning has been clear: 👉 One of the world’s leading providers of small biogas solutions

⚠️ The Ground Reality: After-Sales Service

While the technology and concept of biogas plants are powerful, the real challenge lies in execution and service.

In a recent case:

A dairy farm in Salem (80+ cows), where the promise was biogas equivalent to ~15 LPG cylinders

After one year of installation, the farmer—who has a mechanical engineering background—encountered problems with the biogas plant.

Service was requested over a month ago

No field technician visit had taken place until yesterday. Only yesterday did they finally come.

Customer support responses have been inconsistent and misleading

There is a clear gap in coordination between support and field teams

Visible cracks in the installed plant raise serious durability concerns


🌱 Why This Matters

India is pushing hard towards:

Renewable energy adoption

Sustainable agriculture

Waste-to-energy solutions

Climate-smart farming practices


Biogas systems play a crucial role in this transition.

But without reliable after-sales service, farmer trust breaks down.

And when trust breaks: ➡️ Technology adoption slows

➡️ The entire ecosystem suffers

During the interaction, they explained the growing importance of probiotics in poultry farming. Microbial-based solutions play a crucial role in improving gut health, immunity, feed efficiency, and overall flock performance in poultry.

With the global shift towards reducing antibiotics in livestock farming, probiotic-based solutions are emerging as an effective alternative for healthy poultry production and sustainable livestock management.

It was inspiring to learn about innovations that support science-based animal nutrition, poultry health management, and sustainable agriculture practices. Conversations like these highlight how collaboration between farmers, veterinarians, agri-entrepreneurs, and researchers can accelerate the adoption of eco-friendly technologies in the livestock sector.

🌱 Lean Farming & Sustainable Pest Management at Nannilam Eco Village

In continuation of my previous post on Lean Farming, one of the key elements in improving farm efficiency is organic pest management.

As part of this initiative, I provided a sample organic pest trapper to Mr. Sivaprakasam, Farm Manager at Nannilam Eco Village, to conduct an R&D trial of a patented pest management product developed by Bioorgo.

This innovative trap is designed to specifically capture female fruit flies, which play a major role in fruit fly population growth and crop damage. By targeting the breeding population, this technology could significantly improve integrated pest management (IPM) in vegetable farming.

Such agri innovations are essential for building sustainable agriculture systems, reducing chemical pesticide usage, and improving farm productivity.

We are looking forward to the results of this experiment over the next few months and hope it will contribute to the Lean Farming model being developed at Nannilam Eco Village.
