I had the opportunity to interview Georgina Yaa Kwartemma Boamah, Co-Founder of Verte Tower, a Ghana-based agritech startup redefining how food can be produced in space-constrained and climate-challenged environments.

Verte Tower develops vertical and hydroponic farming systems that allow farmers and communities to grow vegetables using minimal land and water. By focusing on climate-smart, year-round production, the startup directly addresses pressing challenges such as food security, urban agriculture, and youth participation in farming.

With innovation rooted in local realities, Verte Tower is playing a growing role in building a resilient and sustainable food system in Ghana.

Inside PM Farms: A Profitable Grasscutter Farming Model in Ghana

I recently visited PM Farms, a grasscutter farm managed by Mr. Francis, who has been successfully running the venture for nearly six years. The farm is focused on both meat production and breeding, and it clearly reflects years of experience, discipline, and consistent management.

One of the highlights of the visit was the well-maintained housing system, which stands out when compared to many other grasscutter farms in Ghana. The animals are kept in clean, organized enclosures that support healthy growth and breeding.

Mr. Francis also showed me the fodder production area, where maize is cultivated across three acres exclusively for feeding the grasscutters. This integration of fodder cultivation with livestock rearing not only reduces feed costs but also strengthens the sustainability of the farm.

According to Mr. Francis, grasscutter farming has proven to be a profitable venture, largely due to the strong and consistent local demand for grasscutter meat. PM Farms serves as a practical example of how well-planned infrastructure, dedicated fodder management, and market understanding can make small livestock farming both viable and rewarding.

I recently had the opportunity to meet Fafape Ama, widely known as the Mushroom Queen of Ghana. A Master’s degree holder, her journey into agribusiness began in 2015 with just 10 oyster mushroom grow bags.

What started small has now grown into a remarkable enterprise producing nearly 20,000 mushroom bags per season. What stood out most was not large-scale infrastructure, but her simple, cost-effective setup and deep understanding of the market. Her story is a powerful reminder that innovation and consistency matter more than heavy capital investment.

According to her, Ghana’s mushroom market is currently utilised at only 10%, yet demand is increasing steadily year after year. This presents a massive opportunity for youth, women entrepreneurs, and agripreneurs looking for scalable, sustainable business models.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Dr. Victor A. Amankwaah at CSIR–Crops Research Institute, Kumasi. Dr. Amankwaah leads the Tissue Culture Section, a unit that plays a vital role in strengthening Ghana’s food security.

His team focuses on tissue culture propagation of key staple crops such as cassava, banana, cocoyam, taro, and sweet potato — the predominant crops grown across the country. Through advanced scientific methods, they produce disease-free, high-quality saplings and supply them to farmers, helping enhance yield, resilience, and overall farm productivity.

It was inspiring to see how research and technology are directly supporting farmers on the ground.

🌱 Strengthening Indo–Ghana Agricultural Innovation 🇮🇳🤝🇬🇭

I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Ernest Baafi, Deputy Director of the Crops Research Institute (CSIR-CRI), and we had a very insightful discussion on advancing agricultural technology in Ghana.

During the visit, I introduced two impactful agri-tech innovations from India:

🔹 Sathyam Smart Farm – Specialists in agricultural automation, helping farmers reduce manual labour and improve efficiency.
🔹 EF Polymer – A sustainable solution that enhances soil moisture retention and significantly reduces water usage.

Dr. Ernest Baafi was highly impressed with both solutions, and CSIR-CRI is planning to initiate R&D studies to evaluate their performance under local conditions.

CSIR-CRI is already collaborating with Arima Farms, where they have successfully cultivated wheat and soybean varieties brought from ICAR, India. This partnership demonstrates the potential of combining global innovation with local expertise to strengthen Ghana’s agricultural sector.

Excited to see more meaningful Indo–Ghana collaborations that support sustainable farming and empower farmers with future-ready technology. 🌾🌍

I recently visited CSIR – Crops Research Institute (CSIR-CRI), Ghana, where an exciting collaboration is underway between Arima Farms and CSIR-CRI to introduce a high-performing soybean variety (Pride 99) from ICAR, India.

CSIR-CRI is one of Ghana’s leading agricultural research institutions, playing a crucial role in advancing crop science, innovation, and sustainable farming practices across the country.

Arima Farms, known for its strong focus on sustainable and environmentally responsible agriculture, is partnering with CSIR-CRI to strengthen Ghana’s soybean value chain. This collaboration aims to boost soybean production, a key staple crop used widely in food products and as a source of vegetable oil.

Beyond funding, Arima Farms is also supporting this initiative through capacity building, training, irrigation support, and mechanization facilities, ensuring long-term impact and knowledge transfer.

I also had the opportunity to interact with Dr.Kennedy, who is involved in soybean research at CSIR-CRI. The initial results from the field trials are very promising.
