Farmers Raise Key Issues at Salem District Grievance Meeting

A farmers’ grievance redressal meeting was held yesterday at the Salem District Collectorate, where Salem District Collector Thiru Ilambagavath interacted with farmers and listened to their concerns. Officials also created awareness among farmers about the El Niño phenomenon and its potential impact on agriculture and rainfall patterns.

I attended the meeting to observe the proceedings and understand the key challenges faced by farmers in Salem district.

Several important issues and demands were raised by farmers during the meeting:

- Status of Previous Petitions: Farmers sought updates on petitions submitted during earlier grievance meetings.
- Revival of Lakes: Farmers suggested utilising the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), popularly known as the 100 Days Work Scheme, to revive and restore lakes and other water bodies.
- Drought-Prone District Declaration: Farmers demanded that Salem district be declared a drought-prone district to address the challenges caused by inadequate rainfall and water scarcity.
- Crop Insurance: Farmers raised concerns and sought support regarding crop insurance coverage and related issues.
- Pending Seed Paddy Subsidies: Some farmers reported that they were yet to receive subsidies for seed paddy (vidhai nel).
- Livestock Feed Subsidy: Farmers highlighted the need for subsidies and support to manage livestock feed costs.
- Wild Boar Menace: Farmers expressed concerns about crop damage caused by wild boars and the need for effective measures to protect agricultural lands.

The meeting highlighted the importance of addressing farmers’ concerns in a timely manner, strengthening water conservation measures, ensuring the timely delivery of government subsidies, and providing effective solutions to challenges affecting agricultural livelihoods.

As climate variability and the possibility of El Niño-related impacts remain important concerns, water resource management, drought preparedness, crop insurance, and farmer support systems deserve particular attention.

Regular grievance meetings provide an important platform for farmers to communicate their problems directly to district officials and seek appropriate action.

**Discussion with the Salem District Fisheries Department**

We had a fruitful discussion with **Mr. Gokula Ramanan, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Salem**, regarding potential collaboration between the Salem District Fisheries Department and **One Terra Foundation**.

The discussion focused on exploring opportunities to promote sustainable fisheries, support fishing communities, encourage responsible aquaculture practices, and strengthen rural livelihoods. We also discussed the potential role of **digital marketing, digital outreach, and social media promotion** in creating awareness about fisheries-related government schemes, promoting fish farmers’ products, improving market access, and connecting fisheries entrepreneurs with wider audiences.

Through this collaboration, One Terra Foundation aims to support the fisheries sector by combining sustainability initiatives with digital communication and marketing strategies to create greater visibility and new opportunities for fishing communities and fish farmers.

🌾 **Celebrating Traditional Seeds, Food, and Agricultural Heritage at Salem Food Festival**

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of visiting the **Salem Food Festival**, organised by the Salem Marabu Sandhai team. We were accompanied by the Nannilam Ecovillage team, including Mr. Sivaprakasam and Mr. Kumar.

One of the highlights of the festival was the remarkable showcase by the **Salem Marabu Vidhai team**, featuring around **500 varieties of heirloom seeds**. The event also celebrated traditional food items, bringing attention to our rich culinary heritage and the importance of preserving indigenous food traditions.

In a world increasingly focused on modern food systems, such initiatives remind us of the importance of conserving traditional seeds, protecting agricultural biodiversity, and promoting sustainable food practices.

Our traditional seeds are not just part of our agricultural history; they are valuable resources for future generations, contributing to food security, climate resilience, and sustainable farming.

Kudos to the Salem Marabu Sandhai team and everyone involved in preserving our traditional seeds, food, and farming knowledge. 🌱

🌿📸 Nature Photo Walk at Nannilam Eco Village

It was a wonderful experience to be part of a Nature Photo Walk at Nannilam Eco Village, where photography became a powerful medium to observe, document and tell stories about nature, agriculture and rural life.

The photo walk was organised by Mr. Fardheen, who brought together a team of 15 participants from Bengaluru to experience Nannilam Eco Village through their cameras.

The central idea was simple yet powerful:

“Create a story through photographs.” 📷🌱

What made the experience particularly interesting was the diversity of the participants. The group included professionals and enthusiasts from different creative fields such as actors, cinematographers, writers and photographers.

I had the opportunity to share some of my experiences from agricultural journalism, particularly on how photography and visual storytelling can help document farmers, agricultural practices, rural communities and innovations in sustainability.

For me, agriculture is not just about crops and farming—it is also about people, landscapes, traditions, livelihoods and the stories behind them.

Places like Nannilam Eco Village provide a beautiful living landscape where nature, farming, traditional knowledge and sustainable living come together.

A camera can capture an image, but a thoughtful photographer can capture a story, emotion and perspective. 🌏📸

A landmark step forward in strengthening agricultural cooperation between India and Ghana.

🌱 A Meaningful Saturday at Nannilam Eco Village

Saturday at Nannilam Eco Village was filled with inspiring guests, meaningful conversations, and ideas for the future of sustainable agriculture.

One of the important guests was Mrs. Archana Stalin and Mr. Stalin, founders of myHarvest Farms.

🌾 What does myHarvest Farms do?

At its core, the myHarvest model connects farmers directly with urban consumers:

Farmers → Natural/Chemical-free Cultivation → Procurement & Aggregation → Processing & Packing → Urban Consumers

Rather than simply owning large farms, myHarvest works closely with farmers, helping aggregate their produce and connect it with consumers. According to a 2024 interview, the company was working with 300+ farmers across Tamil Nadu, with its produce initially distributed primarily in Chennai.

During their visit, Mr. Rajesh, Founder of Nannilam Eco Village, had an interesting interaction with Archana Stalin on how similar farmer-based models could potentially be developed in the Kalvarayan Hills in the future.

I also had the opportunity to interview Archana Stalin and Mr. Stalin about their entrepreneurial journey, business model, experiences, and their approach to connecting farmers with consumers.

It was a valuable exchange of ideas, and I look forward to future collaborations between Nannilam Eco Village, myHarvest Farms, and Country Farmss Media to create more sustainable and farmer-centric models.
