So it turns out I have limited space on my disk, which means I cannot create long meditation videos at the moment. I've tried cleaning up some room but it's still not enough to make the Dark Side Meditation video how I want. As of now, it will be put on hold and I will focus on more musical scores until I get a new computer with extra storage.

My Review of Prey (2022)

The film, in all honesty, is NOT better than the original. It's a solid 2.5 or 3 out of 5 when you take into consideration the Predator lore and the entire culture of the Yautja. I keep seeing people posting how it's the best film of all time, the best film of 2022, which is not true because did everyone forget Top Gun: Maverick, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and The Batman?

Let's be honest. The CGI was pretty bad. The only good shots of the Predator are when the physical costume was on screen. The environmental shots are beautiful, I will give it that. The music was decent yet appropriate for certain parts but nothing memorable like the original. Coming from Native American blood myself, I can say they depicted our people correctly. The final fight and how Naru killed the Predator were completely cartoonish and I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that she was able to kill a Yautja, an interstellar alien that has an entire planet filled with the same species where their culture is strictly focused on hunting big game across the universe, yet she couldn't hunt and was almost killed by a mountain lion and bear if it wasn't for her fellow tribe members and or the Predator intervening. I support Naru wanting to become a hunter, but at the beginning of the film we see her struggling to successfully hunt anything, and within 2-3 days after that, she's already killing rabbits, taking out 6-10 men single handily, and finally killing the Predator.

Now, let's talk about The Predator itself. Multiple characters in the film challenged the Predator, yet he didn't claim one human skull. Naru's brother was one of those characters. I don't see why the Predator didn't rip his spine and skull out right in front of Naru. It would have made the Predator look way more badass and scary and would bring Naru down to her lowest point, where she could have been debating if it's even worth being a huntress at this point since all the hunters from her tribe and the french hunters are dying off so easily. The Predator's unmasked design looks like a bulldog Yautja hybrid and it threw me off. I don't understand why Yautja can't look like Yautja anymore. Yautja's mandibles can easily be broken off by just yanking them. The Predator can target things without its Biomask on, which doesn't make sense considering they need it to lock on to fire at their targets, but I guess it doesn't matter since the Predator was not smart enough to realize it targeted itself. I don't know why he didn't try to find it right away since that's one of the main pieces of gear it needs to have a successful hunt. I was hoping they would introduce a female Yautja. For Predator fans, we know that when a female Yautja becomes a hunter, she is trying to prove to her race and clan that she is worthy enough to be a part of the hierarchy. This was a missed opportunity to have two female species hunt each other, especially when in both cultures, females are not viewed as heirs, but more as caretakers, while the males go out and hunt and are viewed as the successors.

Overall, the film is okay. The original 1987 film is by far the superior film and nothing will ever top it. Critics and audience members who are making this fallacious claim are insulting Predator fans and its origins. This comparison is equivalent to those who claim The Last Jedi is better than A New Hope. Please stop saying that. Every time I see "Best film since the original." it makes me cringe since they fail to go into depth on how that statement can be true. The only defense I've seen is that the cinematography was beautiful. Beautiful cinematography does make a film worth five stars. People said The Last Jedi was shot beautifully but had nothing else to say. Prey overall is decent and by far better than The Predator from 2018. The idea of Yautja hunting on earth during different times of history is a great concept. I hope Disney makes more films where we can see Predators fight and hunt in Ancient Japan, Egypt, and the Vikings.
