Bulbophyllum (cruentum × phalaenopsis) has been with me long enough that I stopped waiting on flowers and just started enjoying the foliage, which with this cross is honestly the whole personality. Big, thick, leathery leaves on a rhizome that creeps wherever it feels like and never once where I've asked it to.

And then: a bud. Low at the base, half hidden, the kind you only notice because you were fussing over something else nearby.

If you've grown the big leaf Bulbos, you know the deal. They bloom when the plant has bulked up enough to afford it, and not a season sooner. There's no trick and no miracle fertilizer. Just steady water, bright shade, moving air, and years of showing up for a plant that gives you no indication it's ever going to reward you.

First bloom, after all this time. I'm a little emotional about a flower.

(And yes, I'm mentally preparing for the fragrance. That Bulbos parentage doesn't tend to forgive.)

#ad My mom gave me a money tree, so I gave her the best possible shot at working. 😉‪@Glowrium‬ #GLOWRIUM

She went straight into the Glowrium G11 grow light and plant stand. Most houseplants want bright indirect light and money trees are no exception, so I keep the ring about 12” above her and run it 12 hours a day, all scheduled from the app.

What I like about this one: the stand fits pots from 12” to 14.5” and the pole extends from 57” to 70”, so as she grows I can raise the light with her. Full spectrum, 56 LEDs, dimmable from 1% to 100%, with an auto timer and circadian mode. And I can control the whole thing from my phone.
