Wednesday, July 22nd: The word of the day is “SIZZLIN,” as Texas is expected to experience scorching temperatures, with afternoon highs reaching into the triple digits. Mother Nature is serving up the heat, and it looks like this trend will continue for the rest of July. With these high afternoon temperatures and slow-dimming nights, the risk of heat-related illnesses will increase. It's important to keep an eye on those who are more susceptible to the heat.

Tropical Storm Bertha is still active, but it appears that upper-level wind shear is affecting its strength. Maximum sustained winds are around 50 MPH in a cluster of storms located in the northern Gulf, off the Mississippi coast, moving west at approximately 6 MPH.

The good news is that we expect a weakening trend to begin shortly, and Bertha will likely be on the verge of dissipating completely by the time it makes landfall along the upper Texas Gulf Coast on Thursday evening.

I want to emphasize that we continue to expect low impacts from this storm. We may see scattered showers and storms along the Texas Gulf Coast, as well as dangerous rip currents and minor coastal flooding. Gusty winds are also possible along the coast.

Overall, this is not anticipated to become a major issue for us. Even if Bertha manages to remain intact as it moves into South Texas, total rainfall amounts in the Coastal Bend (around Corpus Christi) and along the Upper Texas Gulf Coast are expected to be about one inch. If Bertha weakens more quickly today into Thursday, we may not see that much rain reach Texas at all.

Tuesday, July 21st - Today's video will be delayed until the late afternoon. Our main weather hazard over the next several days across Texas will be DANGEROUS HEAT. Not only will our daytime temperatures be in the triple digits, but overnight lows won't fall below 78-84 degrees for many folks. That'll increase the risk of heat illnesses, especially for vulnerable populations. Tropical Storm Bertha is still expected to weaken substantially before approaching Texas by late Thursday and Friday, bringing scattered showers, rip current danger, and minor coastal flooding to the Texas Gulf Coast. Overall impacts from Bertha still appear limited for Texas. ~David

7/20 9 PM: Tropical Storm Bertha is in the Gulf and generally headed west toward Texas, but it will be a weakening system. Dangerous rip currents along the entire coast, and *perhaps* some rain chances for the Coastal Plains, Southeast Texas, and the Golden Triangle by Thursday and Friday. We'll keep watching, but as of this evening, I'm thinking it'll be a lower-end event. Heck, it may dissipate before it gets west of Louisiana. ~David

7/18 230PM: Scattered thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening across the western third of Texas. Pockets of rapid-onset flooding may occur due to heavy rain. Dangerous lightning and gusty winds are also possible. These rains will occur well west of the ongoing river flooding and recovery efforts across the Hill Country, Edwards Plateau, Rio Grande Plains, and South Texas. ~David

7/17 1135AM: Heavy rain fell overnight over Junction, and another flood wave is moving down the Llano River through Mason and Llano today and tonight. Flash flood emergencies are in effect for Ozona and Sonora, where more than 5 inches of rain has fallen this morning and many roads are impassable. Turn around, don't drown! Stay away from creeks, streams, and rivers. Rainfall intensities will continue to decrease as we get past lunchtime. See less

7/17 313AM: Heavy thunderstorms continue from north of Camp Wood and Rocksprings through Sonora, Junction, Mason, Brady, and toward Abilene.

New flooding is occurring in parts of the Edwards Plateau and Hill Country, with several Flash Flood Warnings in effect. Another round of river rises is expected along portions of the Llano River later today as runoff moves downstream.

Avoid flooded roads, low-water crossings, and river access areas. Conditions may be especially difficult to recognize before sunrise.
