NEW TEXAS DROUGHT MONITOR: The news isn't great. Even though some folks got rain last week, we're still in rough shape, with nearly all of Texas in drought. I do not expect beneficial rain outside the western quarter of Texas for about a week. Last week's rains temporarily reduced overall wildfire risk and may have greened the grass, but without more rain, those improvements will wane. How's it in your part of the state? ~David

9/27 3:30PM: WPC has already issued highlights for potential heavy rain on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday across Texas. Monday night into Tuesday night still favors the western third of Texas. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday continue to favor that risk spreading into the eastern two-thirds of Texas.

By next weekend, nearly all of Texas will likely have rainfall. In fact, we expect several regions will have received at least a few inches. If that falls over a day, great! If very heavy rain falls over hours, it could lead to rapid-onset flooding. Severe storms may also pose a risk.

TEXAS WEATHER - SUNDAY MORNING UPDATE

Rain will return to Texas this upcoming week. You've probably seen some of the hype on social media. We are expecting several days of thunderstorm potential, starting off in the western half of Texas over the next few days. Beginning Wednesday and continuing into the upcoming weekend, we will see thunderstorm chances spread to the eastern two-thirds of Texas.


That doesn't mean it'll rain constantly. A complicating factor in our first 'fall system' of the year is that moisture from Hurricane Polo in the eastern Pacific will flow into Texas, helping to increase the available moisture and, consequently, the potential rain totals. Unfortunately, this means we will have to deal with some risk of flooding, though specifics will depend on whether and where heavier rain sets up. We cannot accurately predict this at this stage; however, we will be monitoring the western third of Texas from Monday night through Tuesday. The risk could expand into the eastern two-thirds of Texas starting Wednesday.


Some risk of severe storms may also exist, but no formal risk areas have been outlined yet. The forecast *WILL* change, and I'm purposely not throwing out 'numbers' in this initial forecast today because I know they'll likely shift/change. (I will discuss them in my detailed video update/written post tonight).

TL;DR: It will rain across most of Texas at some point over the next week. Some areas could receive several inches of rain, and flooding could become an issue. It's too early to determine the extent or severity of any flooding. Additionally, isolated severe storm potential may develop by midweek.

As a reminder, our goal is to present the latest information without seeking fame or financial gain. We don't need to boost our follower numbers, and I personally am not concerned if our content goes viral. I recommend consulting multiple sources of weather information—yes, that means more than just us! Your local National Weather Service office is also an excellent resource.
