Navigating Life's Unexpected Turns:
Life often takes us on unexpected journeys, where dreams and reality intertwine in ways we never anticipated. As I sit here, reflecting on my cousin's exciting new adventure of leaving not just her home but our country, I am flooded with memories and emotions. At her age, I too had big plans – dreams of moving to the USA to become an au pair. It was a passion I shared with my mom when I was just eight years old, and she supported me wholeheartedly. But life had other plans. My mom passed away when I was twelve, and with her, a part of my dream seemed to fade away.
Now, as I watch my cousin prepare to embark on her journey, I can’t help but replay those conversations with my uncles. These are men I knew from a different era when I was the center of their world. Today, I see them as fathers, devoted to their children, willing to move mountains to make their dreams come true. It’s a heartwarming transformation – from protectors of little kids to pillars of support for young adults who are now stepping into their own futures.
In this phase of life, where parents become the unwavering support system, the safety net, and eventually, the springboard, there seems to be a certain guarantee of success. With their backing, these young adults have every chance to thrive. As they step into relationships and expand our family, it’s a wholesome, beautiful evolution.
Yet, amidst all this warmth and support, I find myself grappling with mixed emotions. My dad tries – he really does – to be there for me. He is my backbone, my support. But sometimes, our relationship feels complicated, like there’s a part of me that struggles to connect deeply with him. Despite his presence in my life decisions, there’s a void, a missing connection that I can’t quite pinpoint. Maybe it's because I only knew how to be a daughter to my mom, who was my comfort, my safe haven. Giving that same part of myself to my dad feels impossible, and in that, I feel a deep sadness.
No one celebrated my milestones with the grandeur of events because, truthfully, I never fully reached mine. I excel in everything I do, but I’ve never settled on one thing. Fear of failure, fear that no one truly has my back, even though many do, holds me back. I struggle to give myself completely to them, perhaps because I lack the perfect picture of what that looks like, or maybe because deep down, I simply can’t or don’t want to.
I look at my cousins with a mix of admiration and longing. How fortunate they are, and how unlucky I sometimes feel. Yet, if you glance at my life, it seems I have everything – a comfortable existence, a loving boyfriend, wonderful pets, and a supportive father. So, what’s my problem? Why do I feel like I’m always a step behind, missing out on life?
The truth is, for me, life isn’t a linear journey, nor is it a competition. It’s a series of experiences, each teaching us something valuable, even when we feel lost. Reflecting on my cousin’s journey and my own path, I realize that we all have our unique struggles and triumphs. It’s okay to feel like we’re not where we’re supposed to be because, in the end, the journey is ours to shape.
Embracing the imperfections and uncertainties of life might just be the key to finding peace and purpose in our own story. Let's live it out and see hey!
