Today would be the 89th birthday of Mihály Csíkszentmihályi (pronounced mi-ha-yee cheeks-sent-me-high), an American-Hungarian scientist. He died two years ago, in 2021.
Csíkszentmihályi was the first to research and describe the state of flow — or "optimal performance" — every single one of us knows: It's when you are so engaged in an activity that time just seems to magically fly by.
Today, Google honors Csíkszentmihályi with a custom doodle, and so I thought it'd be a good time to revisit our summary of his book, also titled Flow, in which he explains how we can reach, use, and more reliably maintain this state.
Happy Birthday, Mihály — and wherever you are, have fun forever researching flow!

We just published our 1,000th (written) summary on fourminutebooks.com!! To celebrate, we're giving you a chance to win 1 of 44 copies of the Million-Copy Bestseller Atomic Habits!
To enter, simply submit your email address here: kingsumo.com/g/qcuq45/four-minute-books-1000th-sum… and click the link in your email to confirm your entry before August 18. Then you can complete other tasks to get more entries!
We chose Atomic Habits because its a life-changing book that's been topping bestseller lists since its release in 2018, but more importantly, because small habits are how we built Four Minute Books.
Nik started Four Minute Books with the habit of writing 365 summaries in one year and many more each week after that. Then once I (Luke) came on I also used the power of habits to write over 365 summaries.
This one habit is what allowed us to build a site that's reached over 4 million people. Imagine what you could achieve by changing multiple behaviors! We want to share this power with you, which is why we chose this book to give away to celebrate our 1,000th summary.
