I’m Pat! Captain at a large suburban fire department in Michigan and a mechanical engineer with a background in R&D, holding multiple patents on electric vehicle technology.

This channel is built for firefighters, first responders, and safety professionals facing the growing risks from EVs, micromobility devices, and battery energy storage systems.

With nearly 20 years in the fire service and a career developing and testing EV battery structures, I bring a rare perspective that bridges fireground reality with the engineering behind the tech.

Here, you’ll get training-focused content, real-world incident breakdowns, and practical advice to help you make better decisions when it counts.

I work with FSRI, IAFC, SAE, and other industry leaders to stay ahead of the curve and bring that knowledge straight to you.

Is an ammo can really the safest place to store lithium-ion batteries?

A lot of people in the comments seem to think so.

I’m working on a video to actually put that idea to the test.

Any guesses what might happen? It could get… interesting.

This was my original studio.

Basement corner. Black backdrop. Folding table. One light. Concrete walls.

No production crew. No budget. Just an idea and a camera.

A lot has changed since then, but the mission hasn’t. Keep learning. Keep testing. Keep explaining the hazards in a way that actually makes sense.

You don’t need perfect. You need to start.

Lithium-ion battery fires now have their own fire classification — Class L.
Sounds like progress. But is it?

I look at what Class L actually means, how ISO and NFPA fire classifications differ, and why creating a new letter doesn’t magically solve lithium-ion battery fires — especially when there’s still no certified fire extinguisher for them.

This is about standards vs reality.

I’ll be speaking Friday at the Annual International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) Baltimore Conference 2026.

My talk focuses on lithium-ion battery hazards in the marine environment — what’s actually inside modern marine battery systems, how they fail, and what surveyors, investigators, and operators need to understand when they encounter them.

If you’re attending in person or virtually on Friday, I’ll see you there.

For more than two years, a major fire on a cargo ship near Alaska was brushed off as just “lithium-ion batteries.”

Now the NTSB’s final report is out — and it tells a very different story.
This wasn’t a battery defect.

It was a mechanical cargo-securing failure that led to grid-scale battery energy storage systems breaking loose in heavy seas, suffering internal damage, and ultimately going into thermal runaway.

Second week in a row joining ‪@TheHazMatGuys‬ — and somehow it’s only my first time actually on the show.

Does that make me a regular? Am I a Haz Mat Guy now?

Nah. Just the battery guy crashing their show again.

Myself and ‪@HazmatAndRescue‬ joined ‪@TheHazMatGuys‬ to talk about the proposed DOT Class 10 Placard. What does it mean for first responders, shippers, and regulators dealing with lithium-ion batteries?

What do you think? Should the Class 10 placard be adopted?
Check out the episode and let me know your thoughts.

It's been a busy few weeks! St. Louis, Green Bay, Nashville, Los Angeles, Houston, and next week I'll be in New York City. There's been a lot of things happening in the world of battery failures. Standby, new videos will be out soon!
