I’m Pat! Captain at a large suburban fire department in Michigan and a mechanical engineer with a background in R&D, holding multiple patents on electric vehicle technology.

This channel is built for firefighters, first responders, and safety professionals facing the growing risks from EVs, micromobility devices, and battery energy storage systems.

With nearly 20 years in the fire service and a career developing and testing EV battery structures, I bring a rare perspective that bridges fireground reality with the engineering behind the tech.

Here, you’ll get training-focused content, real-world incident breakdowns, and practical advice to help you make better decisions when it counts.

I work with FSRI, IAFC, SAE, and other industry leaders to stay ahead of the curve and bring that knowledge straight to you.

Second week in a row joining ‪@TheHazMatGuys‬ — and somehow it’s only my first time actually on the show.

Does that make me a regular? Am I a Haz Mat Guy now?

Nah. Just the battery guy crashing their show again.

Headed to New York City this week for the Flashpoint Safety Systems Prevention by Design Symposium on November 14, 2025.

I’ll be joining John Orlando, David Leffingwell, and West Carnahan as we all talk about #LithiumIonBatterySafety.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Myself and ‪@HazmatAndRescue‬ joined ‪@TheHazMatGuys‬ to talk about the proposed DOT Class 10 Placard. What does it mean for first responders, shippers, and regulators dealing with lithium-ion batteries?

What do you think? Should the Class 10 placard be adopted?
Check out the episode and let me know your thoughts.

It's been a busy few weeks! St. Louis, Green Bay, Nashville, Los Angeles, Houston, and next week I'll be in New York City. There's been a lot of things happening in the world of battery failures. Standby, new videos will be out soon!

Firefighters are getting hurt — not from flames, but from what looks like “smoke.”

In Sacramento, five firefighters were hospitalized after a Tesla crash that wasn’t even on fire. The battery pack had been damaged, and when the tow truck moved it, a vapor cloud rolled out hundreds of feet. Four of those firefighters are still off duty months later.

If you’re doing an extrication involving an EV, wear your SCBA. Even if there’s no visible fire.
Lithium-ion batteries can vent highly toxic vapors!

Five incidents. Just days apart.
Semi-trucks and containers carrying tens of thousands of pounds of lithium-ion batteries — burning, crashing, and nearly causing a shipboard disaster.

The common thread?
❌ No placards
❌ No markings
❌ No warnings

First responders are going in blind. That’s why I’m calling again for a Class 10 placard — a clear designation that tells crews exactly what they’re up against before it’s too late.

Never forget. For those who didn’t live it, understand it for what it was.

Millions ride the New York City subway every day. But micromobility devices — e-bikes, e-scooters, and the lithium-ion batteries that power them — are showing up underground.

So far, there hasn’t been a major subway fire. But according to the former FDNY lithium-ion task force supervisor, it’s only a matter of time.

Micromobility devices don’t belong in subways, and they should be banned on any train or bus as well. The risk is too great.

NEW FOOTAGE!

On August 5th, 2025, an electric narrowboat at Gayton Marina, England exploded while charging. In my first video, I explained how it likely happened. Now, new video of the actual explosion confirms just how violent this blast was.
