Everyone is talking about trade barriers on physical products, steel, aluminum, or automotive components. But the real disruption might be happening in the digital space. 💻

The proposed US HIRE Act of 2025 (Halting International Relocation of Employment) isn't just a domestic tax policy. It effectively functions as a tariff on Service Exports. We pay a duty to move physical products across borders. The HIRE Act proposes a 25% excise tax on US companies for every dollar they spend on foreign outsourcing.

This means the US isn't just looking to protect its manufacturing, it is now building walls around its service economy.

For India, where the US accounts for nearly 70% of our IT export revenue, this is a critical development. It shifts the conversation from "Visa Fees" to a fundamental structural barrier that penalizes the cost-advantage of Indian talent.

Is this the beginning of a new era where Services face the same protectionist barriers as Goods? And more importantly, how should Indian IT service providers adapt their models?

For decades over 70% of India’s trade value was carried on foreign vessels, exposing our economy to global price shocks and geopolitical leverage. The creation of state-backed national carrier marks a strategic shift from dependency to self-reliance.

Born out of lessons from the global pandemic, container shortages and skyrocketing freight costs... BCSL is India’s answer to supply chain vulnerabilities.

Key Objectives of BCSL:
Maritime Self-Reliance: Take charge of India’s seaborne trade, now largely dependent on foreign operators.

Supply Chain Resilience: Ensure exporters have containers even during global shortages or geopolitical disruptions (like Red Sea crises).

Boost Trade Connectivity: Operate on key international routes to enhance export-import efficiency and forge new partnerships.

Fleet Development: Build a strong, versatile fleet to secure trade interests and showcase India’s shipbuilding strength.

We will have to wait and watch if India’s NVOCCs will have to compete with the Government or will the government rope in India’s NVOCCs so we all grow together.
