An insightful and timely paper presented at the International Mine Ventilation Congress 2024, “Examining use of absorption chillers to produce mine air cooling from power generation plant waste heat in remote sites”, offers a compelling analysis of how absorption cooling technology could transform thermal management in remote underground mines.
As mining operations push deeper in hotter regions and face increasing pressure to meet net-zero targets, traditional vapour-compression cooling systems are becoming less sustainable due to their high energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions. This study presents a strong case for leveraging waste heat from diesel generators—an underutilized energy stream—through absorption chillers, thereby reducing both operational costs and environmental impact.
Particularly valuable is the comparison between diesel and battery-electric fleets, acknowledging the evolving energy landscape in underground mining. Integrating energy efficiency with climate responsibility, this paper sets the stage for innovative, lower-emission mine cooling strategies aligned with the industry's decarbonization goals.
