Here at From the Frame we love movies and everything that goes into making them. In that vein, we want to delve deeper into what makes us appreciate particular shots, scenes, sequences, bits of dialogue, unexpected performances, and the specificity of choices creators make. In each video we’ll explore various aspects of the filmmaking process to uncover the impact stories can have on us – leaving us amazed, astonished, and in awe long after we’ve turned off the screen.

Well, well, well… it’s been five months since our last upload, but fret not because we’re back with a brand new video. This one’s concerning the emergence, or rather re-emergence, of an increasingly larger frame.

So what’s with “the LARGE FORMAT LOOK”? 👀…

Where misconceptions abound and fallacies have seemingly crystallized into truths, we thought we would release a little video attempting to debunk some pervasive myths about the “large format look.”

Coming soon…

Wow, today officially marks one year since we uploaded our first video on YouTube! We cannot believe all the amazing comments and support we have received from all of you in that time. Having almost 17,000 subscribers in this tiny corner of YouTube seems insane! More than that, your encouraging comments and thoughtful discussions truly keep this little hobby going. You all are the best! Thank you so much for your support; we hope you enjoy the next year of videos with us!

We're working on June's video now, and think it’s gonna be a fun one!

Watching some of Deakins' older interviews, and found this great quote that truly conveys the concept at the heart of our "When the Director Makes You Aware of the Camera" video https://youtu.be/qSIsOwddIAY. It may not be our most watched video, but it is certainly one of our favorites.

"You don't want to get between the audience and that performance, and that's always been my philosophy of cinematography. And when sometimes I see cameras doing these amazingly elaborate things I think, "Well why?" You know, and I go back to Antonioni and Jean-Pierre Melville. When the camera moves, there's a really deliberate point to what it's trying to say to the audience – by making that move or creating that composition. We tend to forget how powerful imagery can be in that way. It can be used to bring more to the table than some other parts."
– Roger Deakins, DP/30: True Grit https://youtu.be/5hzlDmlE0wA?t=777

DUNE Part 2, IMAX, and cropping, oh my!

With all the conversations surrounding the release of this film, and the inevitable discussions on aspect ratios and cropping, we thought we'd release a video sharing some of our thoughts.

New video coming soon! We'll not only delve into this topic, but also take a look at how filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and James Cameron have dealt with the hurdle of multiple deliverables.

New Video Incoming:
Let's talk Fincher. I know there is a lot of focus on what a Fincher film looks like, but there's another interesting aspect going on that I think some people are just starting to take note of. Hope you guys like it. Stay tuned and thanks for all the support!

In our most recent video we discussed how rhythm and dialogue play an important role in the editing of Greta Gerwig's films. If that's something you find interesting we highly recommend checking out The Art of the Cut podcast (open.spotify.com/episode/5E3mskJtUOsU5Ro9rIjDgA) and IndieWire's Filmmaker Toolkit podcast (open.spotify.com/episode/4oNBKVvxABYYwiSfglorU7) where Nick Houy, who has edited all of Gerwig's films, breaks down how this process functioned when editing Barbie.
